Parents encouraged
to join Academic
Booster Club

The Carrollton Academic Booster Club supports academic achievement by recognizing students who have placed a high priority on academic success.

At Carrollton High School, ABC is the financial arm that provides honor roll rewards, honor cords and medals for graduation and scholarships for graduating seniors. Thi s support alone is substantial, but ABC also provides funding for academic programs at Carrollton Junior High and Carrollton Middle School, too.

Fundraising this school year has been down, and the club could use your help. It's easy for families to join by paying online. Thanks in advance for your support.

New counseling,
career support
web page launched

In an effort to make readily available news to help students prepare for graduation and post-secondary plans, the CHS Guidance Counseling Department and Career Center have joined forces to lay the groundwork for a comprehensive one-stop-shop for this information.

"This site offers a wealth of information specifically designed to communicate to students and their parents what they need to know to ensure a strong, successful high school finish and a solid plan for the future," the site's welcome page states.

SAT Word
of the Week

Each week Carrollton High School features an SAT "Word of the Week" to help students build their vocabulary in preparation of the test.

The words chosen come from a list of the top 50 words used on the SAT. This week's word was:

cogent
(koh-juh nt)

As used on the SAT, its meaning is: convincing; reasonable Here it is in a sentence: During debate competitions the winner should be the student who presents the most cogent case.

The band stands were a little crowded Friday night when 80 CJHS eighth graders joined the Trojan Marching Band for the night.
Band growing, gaining
momentum for more

With the last two freshmen band classes being the largest in recent history, the Trojan Marching Band has increased in size - and volume - to the delight of fans in Grisham Stadium.

Last Friday night the CJHS eighth graders joined the band in the pregame performance and in the stands, adding 80 more instruments to an already big sound.
This tradition was started several years ago to give the subfreshmen an idea of how much fun becoming a part of the marching band could be. It apparently is working.

In addition, band fans are encouraged to mark their calendars for Saturday, Oct. 10, when the Trojan band hosts its very first marching competition. Titled Legacy of Champions, the highlight of the awards ceremony will be the presentation of a custom-designed Grand Champion trophy that, CHS Band Director Chris Carr says, " will become the most coveted marching band trophy in the state."

The massive bronze trophy is being designed and created by the University of West Georgia's Art Department, exclusively for the Carrollton High School Band Boosters and the competition. It features an artist's rendition of the Sword of Troy and a Greek shield representing the honor and valor that are displayed every time our Trojans take the field.

"This one-of-a-kind traveling trophy will be presented annually to the best overall judged band at our competition to adorn their band room until the following summer, when it will be reclaimed by the Trojan Nation and placed back in the arena to await its next victor," said Carr. "An engraved plaque with the previous year's winner will be added to the trophy annually as a testimony of each Grand Champion's accomplishment."

Carr said each defending Grand Champion will then be presented an equally symbolic and impressive commemorative "Defending Grand Champion Shield" to keep and inspire their students as they defend their title and try to reclaim the Legacy Sword.
