SAT Word
of the Week

Each week Carrollton High School features an SAT "Word of the Week" to help students build their vocabulary in preparation of the test. Here's the latest:

Dubious
(doo-bee-uh s)

As used on the SAT, its meaning is: Doubtful; of unlikely authenticity .   Here it is in a sentence:  Campaigns promises - regardless the presidential candidate's party - are often dubious at best because Congress will need to pass legislation before those promises can become reality.

This year's motto:

"The best way to predict the future is to create it."

Abraham Lincoln

CHS awarded
international STEM accreditation
Carrollton High School has earned the prestigious AdvancED STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) certification, becoming only the second high school in the state and 18th internationally to earn this designation, considered a mark of distinction and excellence offered to highly effective institutions that prioritize STEM education as a path to success.

"Earning this certification is the result of a multi-year process. We have been very prescriptive in our approach to STEM," said Dr. Mark Albertus, CHS principal. "Many people think that STEM is simply a class. Our teachers have taken the approach that STEM is an educational intertwining of disciplines centered around real-world problem solving."

Albertus said Stacy Lawler, assistant principal and CTAE director, is the one who drove the STEM certification process to fruition by methodically ensuring program alignment and motivating teachers to jump on board.

Albertus also commended the efforts of Stephanie Holloway, CHS library media specialist, for assisting Lawler.

"Mrs. Holloway did a phenomenal job of creating a platform to showcase our STEM programs," he said. "She produced a user-friendly website that is not only informative, but was key in allowing AdvancED to delve deeply into our program and philosophy."

The event, called First Impression Art Auction, will feature artwork from students, teachers, organizations and professional artists throughout and around the Carrollton community.

All proceeds received from the sale will be entirely donated to the Ferst Foundation, a national organization vested in Carrollton that provides books for financially disadvantaged families in an effort to combat childhood illiteracy.

Students learn work expectations at Manufacturing Day
Three Performance Learning Center seniors, Bianca Cousins, Oscar Rodriguez and Azpen Traylor, met the criteria and were selected to participate in the Carroll County Manufacturing Day hosted by the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce.

The event started with a tour of West Georgia Technical College and a tour of the manufacturing companies Yachiyo and OFS plants. During the tour they were able to see, firsthand, how the manufacturing process works. Their day ended at the Burson Center where lunch was provided and the students and chaperones participated in a panel discussion about job opportunities in Carroll County and the skills needed for these positions.

Pictured above front center: Bianca Cousin, PLC student, and Shakierra Jamison, Communities in Schools PLC intern. Back row, from left, are Carrie Olinger, PLC site coordinator; Terina Cousin, PLC teacher; Azpen Traylor and Oscar Rodriguez, PLC students; panelist Nathan Wright, Southwire HR analyst; Aprill Jones-Byrd, PLC principal; and panelist Theresa Fisher, Sugar Foods HR manager.
