Help us recognize
local veterans

In celebration of Veterans Day on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2015, Air Force JROTC at Carrollton High School invites all students and their families to participate in its Annual Veterans Recognition Project.

Major Sylvester Hendrix, head JROTC instructor, asks students to register the names of any military veterans in their immediate family (spouse, father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter, grandfather or grandmother) so they can be recognized during the Veterans Day Program.

Use this form to submit details about your veteran or stop by the JROTC office to pick up a paper form. Deadline to submit names of veterans is Tuesday, Nov. 3.

SAT Word
of the Week

Each week Carrollton High School features an SAT "Word of the Week" to help students build their vocabulary in preparation of the test. Here's the latest:

Apathetic
(ap-uh-thet-ik)

As used on the SAT, its meaning is: feeling or showing little emotion

New fact about the SAT:  Beginning in March of 2016, the Math Test will be divided into two portions: Math Test - No Calculator and Math Test - Calculator. So make sure you're honing up on those arithmetic and fraction skills!
Five of the eight students heading to NATS competition are, from left, Caroline Baldwin, Rachel Skinner, Chasity Luke, Blair Lipham and Sophia Miller. With them is Julie Lowry, choral/voice teacher at CHS.
Performing Arts  students head to NATS competition
Eight Carrollton High School vocalists will be the first in school history to compete in the Southeast Region NATS competition, to be held Nov. 5-7 at Georgia Southern University.

The students are Chasity Luke, Ally Murrah, Blair Lipham, Caroline Baldwin, Brianna Odom, Becca Davis, Sophia Miller and Rachel Skinner.

The National Association of Teachers of Singing has been hosting regional competitions at the collegiate level for years, but just in the past few years has added a high school component, said Julie Lowry, choral/voice teacher at CHS.

"I'm really excited to take our students to this level of competition," said Lowry. "This is a top event that offers a lot of exposure."

Each student will perform three songs in either the classical or musical theatre genre. Terri Fazio, also with CHS Performing Arts, will accompany the students on the piano at the competition, a plus, says Lowry, in that the students have been able to practice their entire repertoire with her over the past several weeks.

Lowry is very familiar with NATS on three levels: One, as a college instructor preparing students for competition; two, as a judge; and three, as a college student performer who had been successful herself in NATS competitions.

"Many colleges will be represented at regional NATS," said Lowry. "This will be a great recruitment opportunity for our students. They are well prepared and I expect them to do well and be noticed."

Career Capstone project includes shadowing experience
To promote career readiness, seniors at the Performance Learning Center are encouraged to do a Career Capstone project about a career they are interested in.

The capstone project involves researching a career, participating in a job shadowing experience, and developing an informational presentation about the chosen career. Each semester, these presentations are shared with a panel consisting of business community members, PLC students and staff members.

Tamoriea Walker was our first student to complete her job shadowing experience. She chose cosmetology because she plans to pursue a cosmetology diploma at West Georgia Technical College when she finishes high school. She shadowed cosmetologist, Candi Gambele, at CD&T Anointed Design, where she received some hands-on experience.

Congratulations, Tamoriea, for successfully completing this part of your capstone project!
