Today We Observe the Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord

On this Feast of the Transfiguration, it occurs to me that this much overlooked day is at least as important as Easter, that Resurrection without Transfiguration (i.e., life extended without life changed and glorified) could be a bad thing.

Telling Our Own Story

Why does a story have such power? ... We live in a world of images and symbols, that's what moves us. Each of us is a story. We were created by God as a story waiting to be told, and each of us has to find a way to tell our story. In the telling of it, we come to recognize and own ourselves. People without a place to tell their story and a person to listen to it never come into possession of themselves... For many people, "myth" means something that isn't true. Please put aside that understanding. Myth is, in fact, something that is so true, that it can be adequately expressed only in story, symbol and ritual.... It's meaning and mystery are so deep and broad that they can be presented only in story form. When you step into a story, you find it is without limits, and you can walk around with it and inside it. It is natural to sing, dance and reenact a story. It is too big and too deep to be merely understood or taught.

Storytelling on Tuesday Evening

Everyone has a story. Either a story about yourself or just a story that you love. It can be something that happened to you that very day years ago, or even in a dream. It doesn't matter. It's your story.

You might like to just hear a story. That's good too. Relaxing and hearing a good story is a long-honored way to pass some time.

Either way, remember that the storytellers will be spinning their unique types of yarns in the Parish Hall Tuesday evening, August 11th at 7:00 pm. They would love for you to join them and join in with a story if you like.
School Supplies Drive
The Episcopal Church Women of the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection invite you to join us in a School Supplies Drive beginning July 27, 2015 and ending August 23, 2015. We are asking for your help.

Many school age children will not have basic school supplies due to today's economic conditions. We are conducting a School Supplies Drive and are asking for your cash (or check) donation. Your donation will help to buy school supplies in bulk. Please note on your check, "School Supplies Drive." If you wish to make a cash donation, please place in an envelope addressed to "School Supplies Drive." Checks and envelopes may be placed in the offertory during each church service

We appreciate your generosity with this endeavor.
News from the Atrium

Dear Friends,

"The Kingdom of Heaven is like . . ."  Jesus knew how to tell stories.  His parables are stories that point the way to the biggest truths about God and His great love for us.  Children young and old are captivated by the parables, and they feature greatly in our Atrium: the Mustard Seed, Pearl of Great Price, The Leaven, are ones ours kids are familiar with.

This fall, we'll be introducing ones they and we may not be as familiar with:

The Hidden Treasure (Matt 13:44), "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field;"

and the Growing Seed (Mark 4:26-29):

"The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground.27 He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how.

28 The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.29 But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come."

What a joy it is to discover God's truths together with these children!

This Sunday, Aug. 9, we have atrium hours as usual:

9:15-10:15am - Level II (ages 6 and up)

10:15am to Offertory (ages 3-6; children are brought in as our gifts are offered at the Altar)

Yours in Christ,

Kelly
