Lamers is mailing 2015-16 specific bus route stop information to families the week of Aug.  10, 2015 . For students continuing in the same school, the information is based on the previous year's pickup and drop-off locations unless an updated busing form was received. For new students or continuing students with updated busing information, the route information should reflect what was received through  July 31, 2015 It is very important for families with students transitioning between buildings to verify and provide updated busing information, especially for students moving from Pre-Kindergarten to a K-3 elementary school.

Parents should watch the mail for bus stop information and review it as soon as possible when it is received. If pickup or drop-off information needs to be updated, please go to the District's Transportation Page to find and complete a transportation form. To ensure transportation can be arranged prior to the start of the school year, please return any updated transportation forms to Lamers Bus Lines so it is received on or before July 31, 2015.

I hope you share my excitement about the upcoming school year. As is typical, much has changed for our schools over the summer. Some of the changes will be very visible such as new teachers and staff, an improved district website, increased access to instructional technology, HVAC improvements, a renovated metals shop, and restroom renovations. We are also pleased to welcome Lugar de Reunion to the Administration and Educational Center.

Some changes are not as obvious but equally as important. Many teachers spent time working on curriculum improvements over the summer. I am happy to report that recent changes in regulations will allow for less testing and more time for learning. Record breaking summer school participation will help hundreds of students to start the school year with more confidence.  An aggressive grant development program will help to fund increased resources for addressing early literacy and college and career readiness.

One thing will not change - our District's core belief that good people make great schools. To that end, administrators and interview teams worked hard this summer to recruit, select and hire the best candidates for our vacancies. We will continue to invest heavily in professional development for new and veteran staff. New staff participate in an intensive orientation program that continues into the year and includes an experienced mentor for each new teacher. District funds and referendum dollars ensure that every staff member and student has a good quality working and learning environment with up to date technology readily available. And a new compensation plan will allow the District to provide a more competitive wage, with the goal of retaining our best teachers.

The quality of public education in Wisconsin has been a topic of conversation lately in politics and the media. I am confident that the quality of education in the Sparta Area School District has never been better. Student achievement, graduation rates, literacy skills, and volunteerism are all increasing. Truancy, discipline referrals, and failure rates are down.

Modern facilities, access to technology, adequate funding and current educational materials contribute to our success, but good people - teachers, support staff, administrators and others - make the difference. In September we will launch our new district website. One new feature will introduce you to some of our outstanding staff members. I encourage you to go to the website often for this, and other useful information.

Thank you for your support of our schools. We are looking forward to a great year.

Principal Sam Russ

Greetings from Sparta High School! Summer is winding down and many of our students and staff are eagerly
preparing for another great school year. Our fall co-curriculars are underway and the students are working very hard preparing for their first contest. Again for this upcoming year, Sparta High's first day of school, Sept. 1, will be Freshmen only. We are planning a day of transition activities to get our Freshmen off to a great start at SHS. Student pictures and textbook pick-up (new this year) will be taken care of prior to the start of school. Any students who missed pictures and textbook pick-up at registration are encouraged to have this taken care of during our Open House. Freshman and new SHS students and parents/guardians are invited to a meeting at 6 p.m. during Open House to discuss SHS and the upcoming year. Our math and English classes will be taught in 88 minute block classes, while all other classes will remain a 44 minute period class.

My staff and I are looking forward to the year beginning Sept. 1, and would like to invite you to our Middle School Open House. Listed below are the dates and times:

  • Seventh/Eighth Graders: Aug. 25: 5 to 7 p.m. with Principal's Presentation at 5:15 and 6:15 p.m. in the Cafetorium and School Pictures from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Stepped Room.

I invite all parents/guardians to be an active participant in our school and look forward to seeing all of you in attendance at such events as Open house, Parent/Teacher Conferences, Band and Choir Concerts, and Athletic Events to name a few. As parents and guardians you play an important role in the success of students at Meadowview Middle School. If at any time you have questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher or myself for assistance. Working together is part of "The Spartan Way," and together we will prepare our students to become college and career ready.

Principal Mike Roddick

The staff is looking forward to a great year at Meadowview Intermediate School! During the summer, our iPads for grades 4 and 5 were replaced with iPad Airs. This is a great learning resource, and during the new school year we are going to focus on the iPads as learning tools and how they are managed. Visible changes will include a
decreased number of apps on the student iPads to allow for more in-depth use of the tools rather than just bouncing around from app to app. Students also will not have access to the App Store. There will be many opportunities for parents to learn about the iPads throughout the school year.

MVI's orientation is Aug. 24. You should have received a mailing regarding the orientation which includes the specific times you and your family are to attend. If not, contact Merry at 366-3481.

Finally, we are always looking for volunteers to come in and work with the children. If you are interested, please contact Principal Mike Roddick at 366-3481 or email at [email protected].

We look for to a great 2015-16 school year at MVI!

Cataract and Lawrence-Lawson Elementary school staff and students are getting set for a year filled with many learning opportunities. Staff members at Lawrence-Lawson and Cataract Elementary are committed to improving student achievement. We provide each student with learning experiences that will develop academic, social, physical and emotional success. Each child is an individual with the potential to grow in all of these areas.

Continued interest and support from parents and the community is essential to ensuring the success of each student. We embrace relationships with all those that support the efforts of the schools' students and staff.  Together, we will provide a quality education for all children. Building partnerships with parents and the community to ensure students are provided the best education is essential to student success.

Throughout this summer teachers have engaged in many professional development opportunities. Staff have already been busy working in their classrooms preparing for the beginning of the 2015-16 school year.  We will continue to focus on best practices that are data-driven and embrace the needs of the whole child.

We are excited about the addition of a Community Learning Center at Cataract this year. This opportunity for extending after-school learning has proven to be a valuable addition to the success of our students in other district schools. Providing students with additional academic learning opportunities contributes to our educational success.

The staff looks forward to seeing each of you at our open houses scheduled at Lawrence-Lawson from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug.20 and at Cataract from 4 to 6 p.m. August 24. If you have any questions about the upcoming school year, please call 366-3438(Lawrence-Lawson) or 366-3453(Cataract).
Principal Diane Everson-Riley

Welcome to the beginning of what promises to be a wonderful school year! At this time of the year, there is great anticipation of what is to come, and the Southside staff is excited to welcome back all students and parents. Together we make a strong Southside family and as always we appreciate your support as your child enters the classroom, learns and grows through the year.

The staff has spent time putting together welcoming rooms, updating curriculum, and strengthening best practices to ensure success for everyone.  We invite you to contribute/volunteer your time and ideas as we continue to build a positive school culture which values every child, promotes critical thinking, joyful learning, and academic achievement.

W e will have a new drop-off and pick-up routine for the school this year. During the first couple of weeks I ask that we all slow down and be patient. This will ensure success and most importantly SAFETY for all children. Look for details at open house. My door is always open to talk about questions, concerns or successes. Southside is honored that you entrust us with your most precious possession and the hours that your child spends with us each day are so important. We are looking forward to seeing our Southside families at Open House from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 20.
Maplewood Elementary School

Maplewood Elementary School serves kindergarten through third grade students. The staff, students, and families of Maplewood will work together to create and implement a nurturing environment where the foundation for life-long success will be established for all children. Our vision statement, "Expanding the Mind, Developing the Body, Encouraging the Heart," represents the value we place on educating the whole child. A whole child approach to education enhances learning by addressing each student's social, emotional, physical, and academic needs.

Educating a child is an immense job, and we need your help to do it well. Please be sure your child comes to school each day rested and ready to learn. Attendance and arriving on time are very important. Please make sure your child is on time and prepared every day.

We also ask that you support us by making sure your child understands that school is important and success in school is something that your family values. There is a great deal of research showing that students whose parents are involved in their education do better in school than children whose parents are not involved.

We hope you'll be an active partner with us to ensure your child is happy, healthy, and successful. We welcome your involvement in our school whether it is part of our parent-teacher group, volunteering in the classroom, or taking part in special events.

Open House at Maplewood Elementary has been scheduled in 10 minute intervals from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 20. Please refer to your welcome back letter that was mailed the week of Aug. 10 for your scheduled time. Pictures will also be taken during this time, but please prioritize your conference time ahead of pictures.

Sparta Montessori Schools is a tuition-free, public charter school serving students in Pre-K through grade 6. Children's House (Pre-K and K) and E1 (Grades 1-3) classrooms are housed at Lakeview, and E2 (Grades 4-6) classrooms are part of the Meadowview campus.

The Montessori Method of education, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, is a child- centered educational approach based on scientific observations of children from birth to adulthood. It is an approach that values the human spirit and the development of the whole  child-physical, social, emotional, and cognitive.  Components that our classrooms have in place to be considered authentically Montessori include multiage groupings, uninterrupted blocks of work time, and guided choice of work activities. Specially designed Montessori learning materials are arranged and available for use in an aesthetically pleasing environment.

Montessori education offers children opportunities to develop their potential as they step out into the world as engaged, competent, responsible, and respectful citizens with an understanding and appreciation that learning is for life. Given the freedom and support to question, to investigate deeply, and to make connections, Montessori students become confident,  enthusiastic, self-directed learners. They are able to think critically, work collaboratively, and  develop self-confidence-a skill set for the 21st century.

There are many ways to support your child's school, even if you have little time to spare. Volunteers and parents who stay informed and interested in the school community are a tremendous asset for our Montessori program. One of the best ways to support your child's   school is to learn about the Montessori approach and practice it at home. Connecting how your child learns at school and at home benefits your child, your family, and the entire Sparta Montessori community.

Please join us for our open house times. Lakeview: Aug. 19: Kindergarten: 4 to  5 p.m.; Pre-K: 5 to 6 p.m.; E1 (1st-3rd Grade): 4 to 6 p.m. Pictures will also be taken from 4 to 6 p.m.  E2 (4th-6th Grade) will be held in conjunction with Meadowview Intermediate from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 24 at Meadowview.

At Sparta Charter Pre-Kindergarten, your child will be surrounded by motivated, smart and caring staff to begin their successful educational journey. Together, with parents and students, we work hard to strengthen Charter Pre-K's reputation as a unique, rigorous "fun/play" learning environment that is truly magical for their first school experience.

Our school was awarded a $30,000 "Read to Lead" grant in July that will promote early literacy in the community and provide some alternative means for supporting learning during the day. On Sept. 26,  UW-La Crosse education majors -- along with many others --  will invade our halls with paint brushes to give the Pre-K a fresh coat of brightness! It truly speaks volumes of the good that happens in education every day and for such young people to give so much of their time inspires the best of all of us. I invite you to check back on our website as the date gets closer for specific details on how you can help, but for now mark the date on your calendars. We are looking for volunteers and thank you in advance!

The Pre-K staff welcomes the Class of 2029 from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 24  to come and check out their classrooms, get their school picture taken and learn about the upcoming school year.

Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year! This year is the second year that our school will be in full operation. When we open the doors on Sept. 1, we will have 65 students in grades 6-8. Innovations STEM Academy is located in Meadowview Middle School in the B-Wing. We have four classrooms at the end of the hallway and utilize all areas, including the hall, throughout our school day. It will be a very exciting year for ISA students with field trips, guest speakers and many hands-on projects that will challenge students beyond the classroom walls.

The philosophy of our school is to provide a challenging student-centered curriculum that will
  • utilize innovative educational strategies
  • prepare students to be global thinkers
  • promote a work ethic necessary to be successful in school, today's business environment and in the future
  • cultivate higher-level critical thinking skills necessary in the real world
  • prepare students for future educational endeavors
  • focus on the relationship between the learner and the teachers.
STEM stands for S cience, T echnology, E ngineering and M ath; however, STEM education is an interdisciplinary and applied approach that is coupled with real-world problem based learning. The goal of our school is to integrate all areas of education into one cohesive learning and teaching paradigm.

If you would like to know more about ISA, like the school on Facebook or contact Principal Toby Oswald at [email protected].
The summer is rapidly coming to an end, and High Point Charter School staff are working to get ready for the upcoming 2015-16 school year. We are beginning the year with a few openings, so if there are families out there looking for a different learning experience for students in 7th through 12th grade, please give me a
call. Once again, we are enthused to help students engage in project-based learning and assist them in demonstrating what they have learned.

Staff spent time over the summer looking at ways we can serve our students better and feel we have added more structure to assist our learners in developing their projects as well as becoming collaborative learners. It is important for students to learn how to work together to reach a goal and solve
problems since most jobs require this skill from their employees.

This year, we are going to focus specifically on developing critical thinking skills with our students as well as writing skills.

Our commitment continues to be in the belief that all students want to learn and can produce projects that demonstrate high levels of learning. We know that when students take on meaningful projects they find learning more relevant and school more engaging. Research shows that well-designed projects produce academic gains and help students develop problem-
solving skills

Our Open House is 5 to 7 p.m. on  Aug. 25. Several evenings for parents to view their student's projects will be scheduled during the school year. As always, we invite parents and the community to stop by anytime to learn more about our program. We also encourage you to become involved through volunteering or providing input on how we can continue to improve as a school.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns you would like to share, please call High Point at 269-3151 or email Margaret Jadack, principal at  [email protected].

We are excited to begin the  18th year of the Sparta Alternative Independent Learning School (SAILS) that was created for students who were at-risk for not graduating from high school. Our goal is to help students achieve one goal: Success in life. This year will be the first for a significant change in our charter; we will now be accepting students as young as 14 years old that meet the Department of Public Instruction definition of at-risk, which will result in some challenges to our programming that we are eager to address. Another exciting opportunity this year will be developing a mentorship program through which we can match our students with an adult mentor in their field of interest.

SAILS Charter School is guided by the vision of generating hope in students and creating opportunities for them to experience success. We believe that while students can't stop the wind from blowing, they can change the direction of their sails and direct the course of their lives in a positive direction. The mission of SAILS is to provide a safe, supportive and productive learning environment for students at-risk of not graduating from high school.

SAILS  strives to assist students to be successful and productive citizens so they can fulfill their dreams. During the past two years,  SAILS  has assisted 47 youth at-risk in earning their diplomas. In doing so, they have provided students who may not have graduated new hope for their future.

We are looking forward to helping the class of 2016 achieve all their individual goals and the collective goal of earning a high school diploma.
