June sets record for Judith Middleton Kroon grants

One of the perks offered to Michigan Certified Rescue organizations is eligibility for Judith Middleton Kroon grants, which encourages rescue groups to pull at-risk cats and dogs from shelters by providing funds for seniors (over age 7), pets with medical or behavior problems, or those designated as "Rescue Only".

June has already set a record for number of grants: 15 kittens and 9 dogs.

The kittens were in shelters, too young to be adopted and too time-consuming to care for by shelter staff, thus categorized as "Rescue Only". Along came volunteers from Paws for Life Rescue, who were able to arrange foster care for the extra few weeks the kittens need to be ready for adoption. See additional June Kroon kittens here. Some notable June dogs include Salem and Braiden, rescued from Michigan shelters by Canine Companion Rescue Center.

Salem had some serious problems, including keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), also called dry eye syndrome (DES).  The vet said it was like windshield wipers scraping across a window with no rain. One eye was so badly damaged it required removal, but while the other is also badly damaged, it was saved.  She will need drops for the rest of her life for lubrication but at least she has some limited vision.  She also had to have one of her remaining four teeth removed. Salem is estimated to be between 10-13 years old with plenty of good months ahead.  Her foster reports that she is a very sweet girl, laid back, easy-going, and loves to cuddle and be petted. Her adoption information is here

Braiden had a tumor on his eyelid and was discovered to be full of ticks. He started antibiotics to fight off any infections that may result from the ticks, and his eyelid tumor was successfully removed. He is a 5 year old boy weighing in at 8 lbs. His foster is doting on him through his recovery and he is loving every minute of it. He will be ready for his forever home in no time. Additional information is here

With the influx of June grant applications, the Judith Middleton Kroon fund balance is running low.
