Here is a player who uses virtuosity not for self-aggrandizement but to glorify the music."
- Raul da Gama, Latin Jazz Network
"An ambitions and alluring merger of jazz and Brazilian music. "
- Dave Roger, WTJU 91.1 FM, Charlottesville, VA
"Michel Nirenberg set out on this debut recording to build bridges between Brazilian contemporary music and American jazz. The bridge he's built will stand the test of time and bear repeated crossing."
- Ken Avis, Baltimore Jazz Alliance
Last summer Brazilian saxophonist and composer Michel Nirenberg made his Washington, D.C. debut to packed audiences. The band received a standing ovation after two nights of outstanding performances. The young musician makes his triumphant return to Twins Jazz in October after receiving critical acclaim for his album of contemporary Brazilian instrumental music entitled Retrato/Portrait. Bassist Leonardo Lucini shares in the accolades. He is the co-artistic director for the album and a major musical force in Washington, D.C. and  graces many albums. Michel Nirenberg continues to build bridges between the classical, samba and choro music he grew up playing in Brazil and the jazz music he explored more deeply as a graduate student in the United States. His compositions celebrate and build on the common roots found in the music of both hemispheres  - a place where African and European influences combine to create a rich and inviting sound. He is on a mission to give jazz lovers a broader view of Brazilian music. Samba is alive and kicking, but there is also choro, forro and maracatu. It's time to discover the richness of Brazilian jazz. Onstage with Michel Nirenberg will be bassist Leonardo Lucini, guitarist Dani Cortaza, pianist Wayne Wilentz and drummer Todd Harrison.

The Flail

"The Flail is a quintet composed of post-music-school cats in their early 30s who rip up the joint... A touch experimental, a bit cacophonous, The Flail artfully lives up to its name." - Karl Stark of the Philadelphia Inquirer
The Flail is a terrific young quintet that feels like a cooperative, but is compositionally led, at least on Never Fear, by trumpeter Dan Blankinship. The band takes the current language of modern jazz and gives it a very personal twist that's full of energy and humor, telling stories along the way by using loose arrangements that allow for the maximum interaction between the band members without letting them fall into chaos.
