THE PINK CUP CHALLENGE
SUNDAY'S EVENT FUNDS BREAST CANCER SCREENINGS
At least eight teams of 20 to 25 people are competing this Sunday afternoon, Oct. 11, in the Pink Cup Breast Cancer Challenge to raise awareness and money for breast cancer screenings.
The event is from
1 - 5:30 p.m. Sunday at
Tift County High School's soccer stadium and practice field.
The teams will
compete for points in timed activities, including relays, obstacle races, bra pong, a scavenger hunt, word-search and other competitions. At the end of the day, the team with the most points wins
"The Pink Cup" trophy and holds it for one year.
"So far, we have reached a total of $10,000," says Cindy Spurlin, one of the organizers. "We have also reached over 20,000 people through the posting of our local breast cancer stories on our Pink Cup Facebook page in only seven days. I'm proud of the fact that we have come together as a community so well to spread breast cancer awareness and the importance of early detection."
The
Pink Cup Challenge benefits the
Tift Regional Medical Center Foundation's Breast Cancer Fund, which allows qualified, economically disadvantaged women to have free breast screening procedures performed at TRMC if they are under-insured and cannot afford out-of-pocket costs for testing.
Co-organizers
Debra Prince and
Spurlin are both breast cancer survivors and have planned a day of challenges and competition to mimic the teamwork necessary for a woman to survive breast cancer.
"We invite anyone to come out and enjoy the fun," Prince says. "If someone wants to participate on a team, we have a community team that is being sponsored, and we can place them on that team."

'FUTURE FARMSTEAD' HOME BRINGS ADVANCE TECHNOLOGY TO LIFE
By BRETT FOUNTAIN
For the Tifton Grapevine
The
Future Farmstead, an experiment focused around making a residential home for farmers as energy efficient as possible, will be dedicated at
5 p.m. Oct. 14 on the
UGA Tifton Campus.
With an estimated energy of bill of $24 for the month of September, the main goal of the project is to
achieve
zero net energy consumption, which means the house uses as much energy as it produces.
Following the ribbon-cutting of the
UGA College of Agriculture and Environmental Science's (CAES) Future Farmstead project on
Wednesday, tours and refreshments will be available at the Farmstead at
2360 Rainwater Road. T
he Farmstead is dedicated to developing and demonstrating advanced technologies which will enhance farmer efficiency to achieve the nation's future energy, food and environmental requirements.
To achieve zero net energy consumption, the Future Homestead implements innovative technology such as solar panels on the building's roof, an induction stove that heats the cookware instead of the stove itself. Countertops are installed that use electromagnetic energy to wirelessly charge cell phones, and there is a two-in-one washing machine and dryer that uses less water.

The house also has insulation that is made from recycled blue jeans and is aided by high-density foam to make sure the house is sealed tight. The Farmstead is also accessible to people with handicaps. From
the stove to the stairs, every part of the house can be accessed from a wheelchair.
The Future Farmstead is housing several UGA graduate students who will treat the building as a classroom as well as a home. The students' job is to maintain the house as well as offer ideas to improve the Farmstead. The students will also produce their own food on site.
CAES professor Dr. Craig Kvien had the idea for the Future Farmstead.
"We built this house using mostly common sense," Kvien said.
He hopes the design will become mandatory not just for farmers, but for all future residential homes. Because the house is solar powered, Kvien said the project should pay for itself within three to five years.

COUNCIL CANDIDATES MEET AT FORUM
The
Tifton-Tift County Chamber of Commerce held a
candidates' forum last
Tuesday at the
UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center for the upcoming
Tifton City Council election
Nov. 3.
All candidates participated: Mayor
Jamie Cater, who is seeking re-election; Councilwoman
Julie Smith, who is seeking the mayor's position;
Jack Folk, running unopposed for the District 2 seat being vacated by
Chris Parrott; and
Frank Sayles Jr., running unopposed for the District 4 seat being vacated by
Julie Smith.
The event was not a debate; all candidates answered the same questions posed by
Chris Beckham of the
Chamber of Commerce. Cater and Smith disagreed over whether or not a property tax hike in
2013 was necessary. Cater had opposed it and said economic conditions improved because voters OK'd a
SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) initiative. Smith said the city two years ago was facing a fiscal crisis and not taking care of basic needs in the community; she also stressed the importance of collaboration with the county, the school board and other governmental entities.
Early voting begins
Monday, Oct. 12.

ON CAMPUS OCT. 17
ABAC HOSTING ALZHEIMER'S WALK
The campus of
Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College will be the site for this year's Alzheimer's Association
Walk to End Alzheimer's on
Oct. 17.
The Alzheimer's Walk is hosted by
ABAC's School of Human Sciences, and students, faculty, staff and
administrators are helping in a variety of ways. The
Alpha Gamma Rho (AGR) fraternity contributes regularly to the Alzheimer's Association, the fraternity's national philanthropy. The fraternity is helping to set up the event stage. Most recently, AGR held a barrel race competition at the ABAC Rodeo Arena with all proceeds going to the Alzheimer's Association. Since 2013, AGR has raised more than $9,000 for the local Alzheimer's Association.
Faculty members and students in the
School of Liberal Arts and the
School of Human Sciences are both raising money for the walk.
Donna Campbell, assistant professor of physical education and logistics chair of the Tifton walk, said her
Wellness and Human Experience class will volunteer at the walk as a community "Give Back" project. Coach
Jennifer Martinez and the
ABAC softball team will volunteer at the walk, assisting with registration, logistics and other needs.
State Rep. Penny Houston is scheduled
at 9 a.m. to open the walk, which is a 2.8-mile trek which begins and ends at the ABAC track. A tribute to those who have experienced or continue to experience Alzheimer's will be a part of the event.
To start or join a team, visit the Alzheimer's Association at

The Rev. Lonnie
Lacy blessing the animals at St. Anne's.
|
WE MAY BE EXPERIENCING INDIAN SUMMER,
but the holiday season is fast upon us. This past week, Lequrica Gaskins, Tifton's economic development director, told us that everybody is in "full planning gear for Tifton's 17th annual Hometown Holiday Christmas Celebration." The HHCC planning committee has an exciting lineup of activities, Gaskins says, including the Christmas parade, ice skating rinks, ferris wheel rides, carnival rides, live entertainment -- and it is all free. The big day is Saturday, Dec. 5. ... THE ANNUAL BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS occurred Wednesday night at St. Anne's Episcopal Church in Tifton. The annual tradition coincides with the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals. ...
