Can’t make it but would like to support First Night with a contribution
to honor Dan Albert, Sunny McCauley and Fred Meurer?
Former Monterey Mayor Dan Albert enthusiastically supported First Night Monterey at its inception, and throughout his years on the City Council. A Monterey native and lifelong city resident, Dan Albert served longer as mayor than anyone in the city's history, a total of 10 two-year terms until he stepped down in 2006. He also taught for 37 years at Monterey High School which he attended while he was growing up, and where he coached varsity football for 23 years. He and his wife Joanne raised their family across the street from the high school, and still make their home there. After his retirement, the school stadium was re-named in his honor.
First Night Monterey extends its appreciation to Sunny McCauley, who was the very first "First Night" volunteer twenty-three years ago, and continues to volunteer along with her husband Paul. Sunny was instrumental in starting the Outreach Program which she coordinated for five years. She has also served on the steering committee for eight years and has worked tirelessly for years as button sales coordinator. She also served as office assistant and as liaison between First Night Monterey and First Night International. Sunny has been a volunteer with the American Red Cross for 45 years; whatever needs to be done, Sunny is there with a laugh and good cheer. Sunny says she volunteers to expand her horizons, meet interesting people and learn new skills. First Night has learned all of those things and more by having her as part of their team.
Fred Meurer, the longtime city manager for the City of Monterey, was a consistent champion of First Night Monterey. He worked for the city for 27 years, including 22 years as city manager. Prior to that, as an Army lieutenant colonel, he was responsible for public works projects at Fort Ord before he began his civilian career. His first project for the city involved the planning, development and construction of what has become the Monterey Sports Center. With the city, he oversaw construction of the coastal Recreation Trail and expansion of Window on the Bay Park. He guided the city's support for many local arts, cultural and human service organizations including First Night Monterey.
