Monster Hunters: On the Trail with Ghost Hunters, Bigfooters, Ufologists, and Other Paranormal Investigators, a new book that introduces us to paranormal and the people devoted to their metaphysical pursuits. And, we'll even have special guests- the Paranormal Investigators of Milwaukee- to demonstrate.

SPOTLIGHT ON DICKEY CHAPELLE

Join us as we welcome John Garofolo, author of

Dickey Chapelle Under Fire: Photographs by the First American Female War Correspondent Killed in Action . Garofolo will provide insight into Dickey's career, her photographs, and legacy on Thursday, November 5th at 7:00 p.m. in the Village Center.

Georgette Mayer a.k.a. Dickey Chapelle was a 1935 Shorewood High School graduate. Her work as a war correspondent and photojournalist took her Iwo Jima, the Dominican Republic, and Vietnam. Chapelle helped break down gender barriers and showed the human impact of war firsthand.

Last month, Shorewood author Lauren Fox enlighten us about the writing process and read from her new book, Days of Awe. We've got several copies; check one out today!

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT

Pins & Needles

Our first community-based knitting/crafting group - Pins & Needles - is off to a successful start; the first meeting in September had 21 participants!

The group is geared towards adults, but older teens are welcome as well. Whether you're currently working on a project or looking to start a new one, join us for some inspiration and motivation. They meet the first Thursday of every month, through December, and is considering adding more meetings in 2016 based on demand.

Please bring your own supplies and project. Other crafts welcome, too!

Here's a highlight of the fall-themed (or not) fun this month for children and families, and teens.

Kids
Puppet Party: make your own puppet, and then participate in a puppet show with the others!

Signs of Fall: A special Saturday story time with sign language.

Halloween Happening: Our annual spooktacular party just for kids. Dress up, trick or treat, play games and more!

Open Mic Night: Show off your talent, Shorewood teens! Open to grades 7-12.

Thank You to Our Friends

October 18-24, 2015, is the tenth annual celebration of National Friends of Libraries Week making it a good time to publicly thank all the Friends of the Shorewood Public Library who contribute time, expertise and membership fees to significantly expand library services for our patrons. ( See list of Friends here.)

The Friends donate funds to programming, collections, the Early Literacy Center, the Summer Celebration, author events and more. In spring 2015, the Friends worked with library staff, Shorewood High School, area businesses and many volunteers to present Shorewood Reads featuring Wisconsin author Nickolas Butler and his novel

Shotgun Lovesongs.

As a thank you to members of the Friends, the Library will host a continental breakfast and behind-the scenes tour of the library on Sunday, October 18 at 10 a.m. This is a special event for Friends members only. Please RSVP to [email protected] by October 15.
