Message from
Joan Finch
Athletic Director

Dear Garces Parents,

As a Garces Memorial High School alumnus, it has been a privilege to work with your student-athletes as they journey through their high school experience. It is a goal of mine to be part of the foundation of your child's life-long devotion to their faith. I was blessed to have parents who valued Catholic education and made the sacrifices to send six children through Garces. My mother graduated from Garces in 1957 and my children are third generation Garces graduates. My last child will graduate this year, which has brought moments of great joy and sadness. Nothing gives me more pride in what we do at Garces than watching our student-athletes compete each and every week. It is the best part of my day. I would be remiss if I did not thank all of my coaches, team parents and the numerous volunteers who assist in making our athletic programs successful.  There's an old saying, "it matters not if you win or lose, but how you play the game" - and it has been an honor and privilege to be associated with a group of people who play the game so well. This fall has brought about some amazing athletic accomplishments...our girls golf team qualified four girls to the individual valley finals scheduled for Nov 3rd and placed second overall in the SWYL. The cross country team has traveled to several out of town meets...competing in Santa Barbara, Santa Clarita, and Atascadero to name a few and will continue their season at Mt. SAC (probably one of the toughest courses on their schedule) this Friday Oct 23rd. The volleyball team beat some of the most competitive teams in the valley...BCHS, BHS, Buchanan and most recently Stockdale. The girls' tennis team will continue their season against Clovis High School on Thursday Oct 22nd, as they battle through the valley tennis tournament. Our boys and girls water polo teams are most likely the strongest in school history...if you want to experience some of the best water polo in town stop by and watch them play...they are impressive. Our football program continues to make strides to compete in the SWYL, which includes many of the top teams in the valley...their strength of schedule, is one of the most difficult in school history. In closing, I would like to share a motivational quote one of my older sisters sent me a few months ago. It states exactly what I think and believe about sports and the lessons it teaches us about life...."hard work beats talent, when talent doesn't work hard." Continue to encourage your student-athletes to work hard and appreciate their gifts and talents...use them to the best of their abilities.

Sincerely,
Joan Finch
