House Update: September 2015
Michelle's Message

Hello,

Summer is winding down and boy has it been a busy one! Labor Day weekend brought to a close our final summer event - the "Wild, Wild Midwest Sport Clays Shoot & BBQ" in beautiful Kokomo, IN. Thank you to the Howard County Izaak Walton League of America for hosting us and, of course, our wonderful presenting sponsors and lead partners Dr Pepper, Kids & Clays and City BBQ. We are so grateful for your support!

In fact, when I look back on the past few months - and forward to the upcoming holiday months - I find myself filled with gratitude for the love and support we receive from our community each day. The Ronald McDonald House of Indiana is fortunate to have so many groups, businesses and individuals that host special events throughout the year to support the families and children who temporarily call our House "home." From simple bake sales to 5k runs and walks, these fundraisers are so important in helping our House continue to thrive and provide a place of comfort to over 5,000 families each year. We are the "House that Love Built" and every brick has been laid with the help of our wonderful supporters. We absolutely could not do this without support of our Central Indiana community. Thank you for allowing us to keep families together and help children heal.

Take care,

Michelle

Family From Ivory Coast Finds Hope and Healing

When Nadine and Ahiza Ettien, of Cote d'Ivoire (the Ivory Coast), welcomed their beautiful baby girl, Mattithia, into the world, they had no idea of the journey they soon would take. In March 2011, just one day after Mattithia's birth, the Ettien family watched as their city of Abidjan erupted into a violent civil war after the presidential election of Alassane Ouattara. "Everything shut down," Ahiza said. "They even closed the hospital. We were forced to go home because it was much too dangerous to be anywhere out in public." Once a peaceful country, Cote d'Ivoire crumbled into chaos in the ensuing warfare. Meanwhile, the Ettien family began to struggle with a crisis much closer to home: They discovered their daughter suffered from congenital heart disease.

"There were no cardiac surgeons for children in Africa. We researched a hospital in Paris, only to find that the surgery would cost $35,000," Ahiza said. "We could not afford this. My wife and I are both teachers, and she has not been paid in over three years. Even if I saved every penny that I made over the next ten years, it would still not be enough."

They continued their search, looking at hospitals across the globe, optimistic that they would eventually find an affordable hospital for their daughter. Though they were often met with disappointment, Ahiza and Nadine refused to give up hope. It was through extensive research that Ahiza discovered The Gift of Life program in the United States. Thus began a two-year-long process of applying for the program and securing a visa -- no easy task in a war-torn country. In exchange for a visa, the government forced Ahiza and Nadine to leave their 8-year-old son with Ahiza's sister. "This was very hard for us, but what could we do? This was our only way to save Mattithia."

We are grateful to our generous corporate partners who support our House and families in so many ways.
