Becoming 2014 The Commons Blog
March 2015

We recently discovered that several members of the Class of 2009 are currently enrolled in Ph.D. or M.D. programs. Larry Frye, Head of the Upper School, pulled several of them together in December to speak about their passions and success beyond Harley.  Take a look, It is well worth the five minutes.

Thank you to our alumni Annie Duckles '09, Chris Hoeger '09, Da Hee Hong '09, Rachel Kurchin '09, Richard Lange '09, Evan Vanable '09, and Emmett Wyman '09 for participating!
We had a Blast!
Blast!

Blast! was a beautiful celebration for The Harley School, one that pulled together Harley families, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends. Thank you to everyone who volunteered, attended, and donated to the event. It was a tremendous success for the School! A huge thank to Harley alumna, Kate Turner Jacus '92. She spoke that evening from the heart about her experiences at Harley and how she wouldn't be where she is today without all of the opportunities she was offered at Harley. The whole crowd cheered when she announced that her daughter, Ainsley, will be starting Nursery in the fall.

Alumni Visitors and Updates

Deidre Chacchia Mapstone '89 recently authored a book titled Sigrun: The Bandamann Saga. She writes that it is a "fantastical story of the Lundrens family, their relationships, and secrets! The Lundgrens own and run their seaside restaurant in Maine. They seem to be an average family. Until they discover that they aren't. This story will take you to familiar places in an unfamiliar way." Her book is available on Amazon. She donated a copy to Harley and I have it next on my book list!

Our interviews with Alex DeSantis and alumni continue! John DeGolyer '77, an Alumni Cup winner, stopped by to visit us all the way from California.

Eric Duerr '08 and his girlfriend, Jessica, stopped by Harley for a visit with faculty and a tour of The Commons. For you younger alumni, take a close look at Eric's shirt: What Would Dolan Do? One of the students stopped Eric on our tour and said, "Man, where did you get that shirt?" and Eric told him that they used to sell it in the school store. The student replied, "Dolan is famous! He's epic!"

Eric is currently at the University of Pittsburgh pursuing a master's in economics.
Richard Sands '69 was recently featured on Rochester's WROC TV "Extraordinary People," not about his lifetime's work at Constellation Brands, but about a craft he has been honing for many years, woodworking. Read and watch this extraordinary story.
Colin Wilcox '03 was in school recently speaking to the senior class on preparing for college, specifically about date rape and sexual assault on college campuses. Colin works as a Social Learning Specialist at the Center for Youth.
This was recently sent to me from Kathy Kearns Frame '73Connor Frame '08 runs into Larry Frye, Head of the Upper School, at the Museum of Natural History in NYC. Both on school field trips! Connor teaches second grade at Success Academy in Harlem. Small world!
