President's Message - Daniel Andersen, CFP®
Dear FPA of Northern California Members:

I would like to wish each and every one of you a very happy close to Q3 and I hope that Q4 brings you much joy and success. 2015 has been an exciting year for my family. My wife and I moved to El Dorado Hills and welcomed our fourth child. I have a lot to be thankful for.

On a professional level, I have been really grateful for my membership in the FPA and especially my role as your President. I have appreciated the growth that I have enjoyed by attending and participating in our monthly meetings. The value of the knowledge gained at our meetings is hard to quantify since it will benefit me, my practice, and my clients for years to come. My participation on the board has offered an additional view into the inner workings of our industry and the opportunity to get to know my colleagues better. I feel like the connections I have made during my time on the board will benefit my practice in the future.

Each one of us decides how to allocate our time and energy. If you have an interest in working to advance your career and our local chapter, please let me know as we are quickly filling our 2016 board positions.

We want to thank everyone who attended our July dinner event at La Provenance in Roseville and contributed to making our first offsite meeting such a success!  If the packed room was any indication, we'd have to say that the combination of Dave Yeske,  a knowledgeable and engaging speaker with a relevant topic, great food and a Roseville location was a winner.

The inaugural Thirsty Thursday mixer at Hot Italian in Midtown Sacramento was also well received and a great way to get to know fellow professionals in a casual setting.  Our next mixer is planned  for Thursday, October 29th at New Broderick's in Midtown Sacramento at 1820 L S treet. Look for emails confirming the date and place. We look forward to seeing you there!

Why do you volunteer? What drives you to take time from your busy schedule to help others? For me, it is my passion for financial literacy and the power that I believe it has to change lives. Back in 2011, not having any board experience, I joined the FPANC as the Director of Pro Bono because of this passion. I did not have a clear plan, I just knew I wanted to get involve and find ways to help others. Here I am four years later (with a one-year hiatus!) and I am so proud of everything that we have accomplished.

Our fifth annual Greater Sacramento Financial Planning Day just occurred on Saturday, October 10 th. Through the dedication of the members who volunteer their time, we have been able to have a successful Financial Planning Day event every year since 2011. I cannot say thank you enough.

The Greater Sacramento Financial Planning Day was my first experience with a pro bono event and when I saw the impact that it had on not only the attendees of the event, but also the volunteers, I wanted to work to bring more opportunities. FPANC members have given presentations to local schools, been a part of Junior Achievement, and now I am presented with another opportunity to work with the Rosemont Community Association to develop a financial literacy program for their residents. I am very excited about this upcoming project, not just for the chance to continue to spread financial literacy, but also because of the relationships that I am fortunate enough to develop along the way. More details will be coming out soon.

I highly encourage you to get more involved. Whatever time you can give, it will be appreciated. I can promise you that you will not regret it. Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions or for more information: [email protected]

Wow! I can't believe the end of the year is already coming upon us! Our open enrollment for sponsors begins in October - so it's that time of year for all members to consider any potential sponsors that you think would be a good fit for our chapter. We all share a responsibility to consider those we come across as a possible partner! Our sponsors are vitally important to our chapter and help us thrive and survive. So, I am calling out to every member to think about the folks you interact with and if you think one might provide us with useful resources, reach out to them!

And don't be afraid to think outside the box either - how about a printing shop for our marketing needs? How about an IT company to help with security? How about a cleaning company for your office? There are lots of possibilities out there!

Additionally, if anyone has a "calling" and would like to consider becoming a board member, I can highly recommend it! You don't have to be "seasoned" or have been a member for any given number of years. Even if it is your very first time, don't be afraid to jump in, lean in, or fumble your way in. All that matters is that you take that first step to becoming a part of a membership organization you want to be a part of and have a say in its future direction. And by working as either the Sponsorship Director or as a committee member, give it a try. You won't regret it! And you will meet lots of fabulous people who will help build your confidence and provide experience in working with all sorts of individuals.

Don't' forget to check out our Sponsor section on our chapter's website -
www.fpanc.org/sponsors - if you are in need of a resource. They should be the first place you reach out to for your planning needs.

And remember, take a moment at the next chapter meeting and introduce yourself to a Partner and begin building that relationship that might very well turn out to be a significant one for you and/or your client down the road.

Any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].
