Year Round

Did you know that this week, August 2nd thru the 8th is National Farmers Market Week?  Some of the markets have special events planned to celebrate the national proclamation. So be sure to make it to market (plus, we like seeing you there)!

We are getting really close to the prime of our harvest.  Our peaches are now freestone, so now's the time to can or freeze some for the winter months.  And our summer apples are starting to roll in. We'll have 3 varieties of plums at market (may I recommend the Satsuma!)  All we need now are Honeycrisp apples and loads of Heirloom Tomatoes and we'll be all set! We plan on harvesting Honeycrisp in about 3 weeks, and Tomatoes are slowly ripening, and we should have lots in about a week. Oh, by the way....did I mention that we are starting to harvest our grapes....they are unbelievably flavorful!

We'll see you at Market!

Summertime Apples
We h
Ginger Gold Apples
ave a number of Summertime Apples:  Zestar!, Ginger Gold, Summer Mac, Dandee Red, and Summer Rambo.

We are noticing that many of the apples have a characteristic called "water core."  Water core is when the center of the apple has a patchy transparent or glossy appearance, and it is because the cells are saturated with water.  Remember the 12 inches of rain that we had a few weeks ago?  We are attributing the water core to the crazy amounts of rain that we received during a period of rapid cell division in the apple.

Apples with water core tend to be sweeter in flavor.  So, when you bite into an apple, or try a sample at market, don't give it the stink-eye, just remember it's water core.

Fill-A-Box:  Stone Fruit
Last Call
It's last call for the August Fill-A-Box Special, which includes Yellow & White Peaches, Donut Peaches, and Yellow & White Nectarines.  The half bushel box weighs about 25 pounds, and is just $40.
Give me a moment to convey how great of a deal this is....

If you were to purchase this quantity of fruit with the per pound price, it would cost about $90 - about 5 pounds of each kind of stone fruit.  And you'll be purchasing them for only $40.

Slice.  Dice.  Bake. Puree.  Freeze.  Juice.  Share.

This is a great opportunity to enjoy a variety of delicious stone fruit.

We'll be filling the boxes Friday for all of the weekend orders, so hurry and get your order in if you want to get one this weekend!!

Become a Winter CSA Member

We are very excited to announce that we are accepting Winter CSA Memberships.

We delivery CSA boxes to members during the winter months:  November/December thru April.  This way you can continue to enjoy locally grown produce when the farmers market isn't in session.  A typical CSA box will include 2 varieties of apples (about 5 pounds in all), sometimes a few pears, veggies, like potatoes, onions, garlic, sweet potatoes, squash, and farm goods like apple cider, canned peaches, applesauce, and jams.  Each CSA box costs $35.

We will be delivering to 4 locations this year

Vienna, VA (Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Chain Bridge Rd)

Lorton, VA (Lorton VRE parking lot)

Washington, DC (Howard University), and new this year,

Fairlington, VA (Fairlington Presbyterian Church, King Street)

We are also offering early Winter CSA sign-up incentives. Depending on when you enroll in the Winter CSA, we'll give you credit to spend in our web store to purchase additional items to go along with your CSA box. Sign up in....

August, and we'll give you $15 credit

September, and we'll give you $10 credit

October, and we'll give you $5 credit

I f you'd love to enjoy our fruit and veggies, but aren't sure the Winter CSA is the best option for you, you can still purchase items from our web store,  and we'll deliver your order when we make CSA deliveries.

If you have any questions, please call (717-334-2722), email ([email protected]) or talk to any of our Farmers Market Employees.
