Please take these home and prayerfully consider how you will give back to UUMC in 2016. Pastor's Pen

Why do pastors and churches talk about money? Is it meant to make people feel uncomfortable or guilty? Do we do it too much? Here are three reasons why pastors talk about money at church.

1.      To Invite People To Help The Church Fulfill Her Calling To Impact The Community And World

No business, organization, or ministry survives without money. Businesses charge their customers for the products and services they receive. Churches do not (though they may charge a fee for a particular class or workshop). Instead, churches invite people to give to meet their financial needs so they can accomplish the work God called them to do, and serve people who cannot repay.

2.       Jesus Talked About Money A Lot!  In Fact . . . .
  • Jesus talked about money more than anything else except the Kingdom of God.
  • Eleven of the thirty-nine parables in the Gospels talk about money.
  • One out of every seven verses in the Gospel of Luke talk about money.
  • About 25 percent of Jesus' teaching in the Gospels relates to money, stewardship, and the resources God has given us.
Why did Jesus talk so much about money?  Because...

3.      There Is A Direct Correlation Between What We Do With Our Money And What We Truly Believe.

Jesus said, "Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also" (Luke 12:34).  In other words, where and how we spend our money is a reflection of where our heart is. But if you think pastors and churches talk too much about money, and ask people to give too often, consider these facts:

  • Only 4% of Americans tithe (give 10% of their income to their church) according to a 2011 survey by the Barna Group.
  • 25% of American Christians give away no money at all (according to a 2008 Christianity Today article - from which the following points are also taken).
  • The average regularly attending churchgoer gives 6% of after-tax income (but it was noted that this figure is skewed by a handful of very generous givers).
  • The median annual giving for an American Christian is $200 - just over half a percent of after-tax income!
  • About 5% of American Christians provide 60% of the money churches receive (it's these people who skew the average mentioned above).
What this tells us, I believe, is that few Christians really believe that their money belongs to God and that they are stewards of the resources God has chosen to entrust to them. Few make a priority commitment to give from the heart. Most of us just "tip" God by dropping a few coins or bills in the plate here and there.

Where does University Methodist come out in their giving?

Of the 525 possible families who could give to the church, 296 actually make a regular contribution to the church.  Those 296 families have pledged $562,883 toward our 2015 expenses.  If you are still giving what you gave to the church 5, 10, 20 years ago, you need to re-evaluate your pledge. If each family, who already contributes, increased their giving by just $10 a week (one inexpensive lunch a week), we would have an increase in income of $153,920. That small increase would not only fulfill our 2016 budget but give us a little extra. Pray about it, then bring your card to worship November 22 or mail it into the office.

In Christ's love,
Dr. Jane
ON NOVEMBER 22nd CENTENARY CHOIR WILL LEAD OUR MUSIC IN WORSHIP: Please make plans to attend to hear this special treat!

The Centenary College Choir will visit UUMC and perform in both worship services (8:30 am & 11:00 am) on Sunday, November 22nd, 2015. Please join us for this very special music event!

Organized in 1941 by Dr. A.C. "Cheesy" Voran, the Centenary College Choir has concertized throughout the world for seven decades, giving rise to its nickname as "America's Singing Ambassadors" by the press.  Constantly investigating new and productive avenues in the world of collegiate choral music, the Choir's innovative spirit has been evidenced in the unique and diverse manner of programming, a repertoire that ranges from Bach to Broadway, world folk music to contemporary church music, and oratorio to opera.  The Choir seeks to engage audiences not only through an eclectic repertoire, but also through emotional, heart-felt music making.  The 2015-2016 program highlights this varied style with the theme "It's About Time" and explores the intersection of time and eternity while promoting peaceful social action in the present.

The young women and men of the Choir come from many areas of the nation and other countries and represent most of the academic majors offered by the College. Members of the Choir receive one of the finest college educations possible while making enduring friendships as a part of the Choir family and tradition. Members are selected by auditions held October through March for the following term. Persons wishing to audition should contact the director of the choir or the school of music to arrange an appointment.  The Choir is affiliated with the Hurley School of Music and offers scholarships for all its members. For those interested in majoring in music, the College offers an extensive Bachelor of Arts Music degree with several optional areas of emphasis, including performance, choral music, sacred/church music, and composition.

A Centenary alumnus himself, Dr. David Hobson (a former UUMC Chapel Chour Director) is in his ninth year serving as director of the Choir.  With advanced Sacred Music and Conducting degrees from Emory University and Louisiana State University, Dr. Hobson provides versatile leadership, balancing the college's church relations and promotional interests with high artistic music making.   "Music is the vehicle that serves the choir's missional purpose," he says, "but the impact of that outward focus is all the more powerful when the Choir sings with dynamic creative excellence and spiritual integrity."

POLAR BEAR PALOOZA 2015!!!

Kids Hope is preparing to host our 6th annual school-wide holiday party on Friday, December 4th from 1:30-3:00 PM at University Terrace Elementary and it's sure to be an arctic "blast"!   It is by far, my favorite day of the Christmas season.   The love is palpable on this day and it will surely warm your heart.  Volunteers will serve as party hosts in each classroom of the school.  They will lead one of 3 stations: Polar Bear Cookie Decorating, Polar Bear Ornament Craft, and Put the Hat on the Polar Bear Game.  We'll have a costumed dancing, singing Polar Bear (aka Adam Darragh) for entertainment and to give each child in the school a snowflake lollipop and a pair of gloves.  It takes almost 60 volunteers being in the same place at the same time to pull off this huge event.  I've already had several mentors tell me they won't be able to make it, so we'd greatly appreciate your help if you're available. Everything will be provided for you to lead your station.  Please let me know if you'd like to help out.

As you can imagine, it takes a lot of prep work in order to pull off an event of this magnitude.  "Elves" are needed on Thursday, December 3rd from 9:30am until... in the Fellowship Hall, to help prepare all of the party bags.  We'll be sorting, counting, bagging cookie decorations, craft supplies, game pieces... and can use all the hands we can get.  At the same time, we'll also be having a mini "painting party" to stencil the Kids Hope logo onto fleece blankets that we'll be giving all of our Kids Hope children. No major crafting skills are necessary.  Lots of work to be done and lots of help needed!  The more...the merrier!  Please let me know if you can help out.

Mentors, please remember that next week is the last week of regular mentoring for this semester.  There will be no mentoring the week of Nov. 30-Dec.4th, as we'll be preparing for the party and I'll need you at the party on Friday, the 4th.

UPCOMING DATES TO NOTE:
  • November 23rd-27th - No School at UT -Thanksgiving Break
  • Friday, December 4th - Kids Hope hosts 6th Annual School-wide Holiday Party - "Polar Bear Palooza"! 1:30-3:00 PM at UT- ALL Volunteers Needed!!!
  • Monday, December 7th 10:30 AM - 1:00 PM - Kids Hope hosts Teachers' Christmas Luncheon (salads, appetizers, desserts needed)
  • December 7th - January 18th -  Volunteers' Winter Break.
  • Tuesday, January 19th - All volunteering resumes at UT.

A Day Away Retreat

Please mark your calendars for Saturday, December 5th and consider spending "a day away" in preparation for your Advent season. Are you thinking, "I don't have time for that!" or  "Lisa has lost her mind- a Saturday in December?"

Please think about it! Advent is a time of waiting and watching.  Let's wait - following the stories of waiting in Scripture - and watch for the birth of the Christ child.  We will gather at 9:30am in the Chapel at the LSU Wesley Foundation.  Wear your comfy clothes, bring your slippers if you like, and we'll move through the day with worship, quiet, stories, and time for your own writing or reading as we pause to reflect on the deeper meaning of Advent and Christmas in our lives. We will conclude the day by 3:00pm.  This will be our second annual Advent day retreat and all of those that came last year, walked away with feelings of hope, rest, and maybe even had a little Christmas sanity that lasted the season.

All ages, men and women are invited to come! To sign up please email Lisa Frost at [email protected] and say "Save me a place!" or visit our website to register online by clicking this link.
