JEFFERSON PARK PROJECT *  Enhance the Loop!!
Enhance the loop B ikers, dog walkers, Pram pushers, fitness enthusiasts...many walk and ride in Jefferson Park.  Mountain Ave is the second most biked way in all of Tucson. Improvements are underway.  Banner's greenway on Lester and Park Avenue improvements are already in the planning stages.  JPNA and the Friends of Jefferson Park are determined to enhance and formalize this project.  ...and guess what?  The Surgeon General put out a report  just for us (see below)!   An "Everybody Walk! Micro Grant" application is being considered ($2500) .     Support the Grant Road Coalition at jeffersonpark.info --they are lobbying for green space along Grant to complete the loop on the north side.
jdchama@msn.comWhat do you suggest?  puppy poop stations, historic signage, mile markers, kiosks, little free library.  Contact Joan Daniels jdchama@msn.com or 323-2165 to join the effort.

The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Promote Walking and Walkable Communities
PANDORA has the SURGEON GENERAL's  WALKING PLAYLIST
Step It Up! The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Promote Walking and Walkable Communities   recognizes the importance of physical activity for people of all ages and abilities. It calls on Americans to be more physically active through walking and calls on the nation to better support walking and walkability.
Improving walkability means that communities are created or enhanced to make it safe and easy to walk and that pedestrian activity is encouraged for all people.   The purpose of the  Call to Action  is to increase walking across the United States by calling for improved access to safe and convenient places to walk and wheelchair roll and by creating a culture that supports these activities for people of all ages and abilities.
The  Call to Action  includes five strategic goals to promote walking and walkable communities in the United States: make walking a national priority; design communities that make it safe and easy to walk for people of all ages and abilities; promote programs and policies to support walking where people live, learn, work, and play; provide information to encourage walking and improve walkability; and fill surveillance, research, and evaluation gaps related to walking and walkability.
Action by multiple sectors of society, as well as by families and individuals, will be needed to achieve these goals.
Transportation, Land Use, and Community Design -  Decisions and plans made by the transportation, land use, and community design sector can affect whether communities and streets are designed to support walking. This sector can change the design of communities and streets through roadway design standards, zoning regulations, and building codes, and improve the pedestrian experience through landscaping, street furniture, and building design. This sector is also integral in the planning and implementation of public transit systems.   See the Surgeon General's report.  Go to   http://everybodywalk.org/

PEDOMETER FACTS
USING A PEDOMETER:   A pedometer is a motion-sensing device worn at the hip to count steps.  Pedometers vary in sophistication, and some can be programmed with your average step length to more accurately estimate distance walked, calories expended and total activity time. It is a useful self-monitoring tool to help you keep track of your total steps and distance walked. You can use the following step index to classify your activity level based on steps per day. Keep in mind that if you regularly participate in non-ambulatory activity, your steps per day value will not accurately represent your activity level.
NUMBER OF STEPS ACTIVITY LEVEL
0-5,000 Sedentary
5,000-7,499 Low Active
7,500-9,999 Somewhat Active
10,000-12,500 Active
12,500 or more Highly Active
*Developed by C Tudor-Locke and DR Bassett Jr. (2004)

A daily goal for most healthy adults is  10,000 steps per day, or approximately five  miles. If your baseline is under this level,
try to increase your steps by 1,000 per day every two weeks until you reach your 10,000 steps per day. To increase your
activity level and daily step counts, look for opportunities to be more active. Park further away from your destination, if it is
safe to do so, and take the stairs instead of the escalator or elevator. Even small amounts of additional activity increase
total calorie expenditure and can make a difference in your fitness level and overall health over time.

Banner Health Supports Jefferson Park proposed bike/walking Loop
Banner Health, citing their plans for a green space on Lester, sent Mayor and Council a strong letter supporting the proposed bike/walking Loop in Jefferson Park.  To see the proposed loop go to jeffersonpark.info and click the "projects" tab. Invest your time locally! If this interests you, attend a JPNA or Friends meeting and see how you can become involved. Some segments of the loop are already in place (Campbell and Mountain) or planned (Lester/Banner, Park, and Grant west of Park).  We need your support to see that the remaining segments are developed.                                           J.Lisa Jones
