Love, class, and false identities collide in Oliver Goldsmith’s fast-paced, surprisingly modern farce from the late 18th century. Mr. Hardcastle is a dignified country gentleman hoping to find a match for his clever daughter Kate in the person of the wealthy Londoner Charles Marlow. Unfortunately, the young Marlow is afflicted with a crippling nervousness around women of high social rank, mainly due to their retractable claws. Lower-class women, however, are a different story entirely, so Kate settles on a ruse to trap the skittish city boy—she will pretend to be her own maid. Kate’s undercover plan sets the stage for mistaken-identity hijinks and ensuing romance, an irresistible combination that has led the play to be adapted for film and television no less than eight times.

The play is set during the latter days of the Roman Empire and tells the fictional story of Titus, a general in the Roman army, who is engaged in a cycle of revenge with Tamora, Queen of the Goths. It is Shakespeare's bloodiest and most violent work and traditionally was one of his least respected plays. Although it was extremely popular in its day, by the later seventeenth century it had fallen out of favour. In the Victorian era, it was disapproved of primarily because of what was considered to be a distasteful use of graphic violence, but from around the middle of the twentieth century its reputation began to improve.

Can breakdancing save the world? From executive producer and rapper Nasir “Nas” Jones, who also provides original music for the film, we are treated to a fascinating look at how hip-hop is striking a resonant chord in the slums, favelas, and ghettos of the world and is inspiring young people to enact social change. Hip-hop music, and the acrobatic breakdancing culture that arose in tandem with it, started on the streets of The Bronx, but its reach is now worldwide. Today, “b-boys” and a growing number of “b-girls” hone their gravity-defying breaking techniques in virtually every country on the planet. Shake the Dust by journalist-turned-filmmaker Adam Sjöberg, chronicles the far-reaching influence of breakdancing.

The Down Hill Strugglers & the Four o'clock Flowers in Concertat the Museum of the City of New York
Tuesday, August 4 @ 6:30 pm
$15-$25

Museum of the City of New York
1220 Fifth Avenue
at 103rd Street
New York, NY 10029
The Down Hill Strugglers and the Four o’clock Flowers will join forces for a concert at the Museum of the City of New York hitting notes ranging from old-time folk to blues and gospel music, all played with a modern edge. The two Brooklyn-based new-wave folk bands regularly headline venues like the Jalopy Theater and the Brooklyn Folk Festival. With their unique blend of an exuberant contemporary sound and their deep roots in southern and rural folk traditions, the groups link the Museum’s Folk City: New York and the Folk Music Revival exhibition to the city’s vibrant and evolving folk music scene.

The Strugglers, who were featured on the soundtrack to the Coen Brothers film "Inside Llewyn Davis" produced by T-Bone Burnett, will be joined by legendary musician John Cohen. Cohen was originally part of a trio of “citybillies” known as the New Lost City Ramblers, who introduced many New Yorkers to Southern mountain and bluegrass music in the 1950s and 1960s. Between songs, Cohen and Eli Smith of the Strugglers will talk about their efforts to enrich the musical tapestry of New York with rural string-band, blues, and other forms of folk music.

Tickets: $15 for Museum members; $20 for Students and Seniors; $25 for general public.

For more information, visit The Down Hill Strugglers & the Four o'clock Flowers in Concert.

Saving Place Series: The Politics of Preservation
Thursday, August 6 @ 6:30 pm

Museum of the City of New York
1220 Fifth Avenue at 103rd Street
New York, NY 10029

This program delves into the themes of our exhibition Saving Place: 50 Years of New York City Landmarks, on view through September 13th.
The New York City Landmarks Law establishes a system for the designation, protection, and preservation of the city's most important architectural and historic properties. The law is implemented by the Landmarks Commission, which is mandated to work with the City Council in carrying out its mission of designating new landmarks. Its work is also impacted by various individuals and groups that have a direct stake in the process: property owners and developers, advocacy groups representing a wide spectrum of beliefs and positions, architects, media outlets, and government agencies. Out of necessity, the political process plays a part in all these interactions. This panel will explore the broad issues that bring the political process to bear on the operations and execution of the Landmarks Law.
