A Message from Supervisor Ally Miller

Happy Fall,

It's that time of year again: the weather is changing, the rain will slowly die down, the kids are back in school and....your property tax statements are arriving.  As many of you will undoubtedly see an increase, I hope you will think about the fact that the same Supervisors who raised and continuously raise your taxes, are also spending their office budget money, your tax dollars, to make charitable donations to organizations such as Planned Parenthood, Chicanos por la Causa and Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation.

In fact, Supervisor Bronson donated over $25,000 in less than 2 years while Supervisor Elias gave over $62,000 in the same time frame.  In some instances, they received campaign donations for their re-elections from Directors and Executives of these same organizations.  The practice is beyond questionable and many have asked of the legality of their being able to spend your money to donate to organizations of their choosing.

While I did ask the County Attorney for legal guidance on this in the Tuesday, September 16th Board meeting, it became clear he was unwilling to answer my questions when he advised me he would provide "no comment" on this issue ( Click here for video clip of County Attorney refusing to comment.)

Ultimately, Supervisors Carroll, Valadez and Elias did not support changing the policy, allowing them the option to continue using taxpayer monies to fund various organizations of their choice.  Supervisor Bronson and Chuck Huckelberry were conveniently absent from the meeting.

Even though I sent out two press releases with corresponding documentation, including a video link from the meeting, not ONE media outlet covered this issue.  While my office has been bombarded with emails and phone calls from residents all over the County to change this policy, my fellow Supervisors do not hold the same concerns.

I encourage each of you to share this information with your friends and neighbors and remind them that County Supervisors should be ensuring your tax dollars are used for core services . Fiduciary responsibility to the taxpayer is not an option, rather an obligation of all elected officials.

Our next Board of Supervisors meeting is October 7th at 9:00 am and I hope to see you there!

Thank you for allowing me to serve you; if you would like more information or have questions/comments, please contact my office (520) 724-2738 or send me an email at [email protected].

Sincerely,

Ally Miller
