COUNTDOWN UNDERWAY:  COMMISSIONING OF THE NEW TEMPORARY RUNWAY  SLATED FOR DECEMBER
Phase Two of Project SOAR, the airfield redevelopment project at AVL, is nearly complete. The new temporary runway (west of the existing runway) will be commissioned in December, and the existing runway will be permanently taken out of commission.

A temporary runway had to be constructed in order for the existing runway to be demolished and replaced. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) prioritized the replacement of AVL's runway as part of the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems, noting the age of the runway (50+ years) and the need to bring our airfield into current FAA standards.

Once the temporary runway is operational, Phase Three of the project (demolition of the old runway and construction of the new runway) will begin.

ADDITIONAL PARKING LOT OPENING NEXT WEEK
TO MEET GROWTH IN PASSENGER DEMAND
Asheville Regional Airport (AVL) experienced a record year of passengers in 2014, and 2015 has been even busier.  Due to the growing number of passengers and in anticipation of a busy Thanksgiving holiday week, an additional customer parking lot will open next week in time for the increase in passengers using the airport.

The new lot will be a credit card-only lot, and is located on Terminal Drive past the terminal building on the right.  Passengers may choose to park in the Short-term Lot, the Long-term Lot or the Long-term Credit Card Lot.  The parking fee for the new lot will be the same as the current Long-term lot: $1.50 per hour, with an $8 per day maximum. Please be advised that the entrance to the new Long-term Credit Card Lot is in a different location than the entrance to the existing lots.  Red and white directional signs along Terminal Drive will guide travelers to the new lot.

WHAT IS THAT UFO COMING IN FOR A LANDING AT AVL?
At Asheville Regional Airport, we sometimes receive phone calls or emails that sound something like this: "I saw a large, unmarked white ... plane, I think ... flying really low around the airport. It made a loud rumbling sound, and it seems to be circling. What is it, and why is it here?"   READ MORE>

INSIDE AVL:
MEET THE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY DIRECTOR

A team of qualified professionals work diligently each day to manage and operate the airport. One of the newest members of the senior team is Shane Stockman, Information Technology Director.

Shane is a seasoned professional in both the information technology and airport fields, with more than twenty years of experience. He recently came to AVL from Columbia Metropolitan Airport in South Carolina, where he was the network engineer for the past fifteen years. He has also held positions as a systems administrator and consultant in the IT field.

At AVL, Shane and his team are responsible for the operations and security of all computer, television, phone and security systems networks, and for the development of new information technology systems.
