TOPICS THIS MONTH
GRATITUDE AND CHILDREN

The holiday season is a time for being grateful. Research has shown that grateful people live happier, healthier lives. Gratitude is also a learned emotion, not one we are born with. How can caregivers teach gratitude to children in care? Here are some simple ideas to model gratitude daily:

* Write a thank you note - Ask the children to help you compose a thank you letter. Better yet, write one to a child in care.

* Thank someone mentally - Remind yourself mentally of the ways others have helped you during the day, especially the children you care for.

Make a written (or verbal) list of things you are grateful for -
This can be a great conversation starter at meals or transition tool with children.

* Meditate - Take time daily to meditate with the children. This can be a great transition for naptime. Plus, once the children are calm and relaxed, you can take time to meditate yourself!

* Savor the moment - Be present with children! Listen to the sound of the rain, go outside to play in the leaves! (We worry about children not being able to focus, but what about adults? How often do adults give undivided attention to one thing?)

The tips above are excerpts from Dr. Ernie Mendez's recent presentation at the CCCR&R/CAPPA conference. For more information on gratitude, please check out Dr. Ernie Mendes' website and books: www.erniemendes.com.

HEALTH & SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
AND SCHOLARSHIP

As of January 1, 2016, the Preventative Health requirement for new licensees is 8 hours of training instead of the current 7 hour training. Anyone who is currently licensed will not need to retake the course; however, those in the process of becoming licensed may want to wait until the January to take this portion of the training.   Child Action, Inc. has a Health & Safety scholarship program that can assist any provider, family child care or child care center staff, with the fees associated with these required classes. This is a reimbursement program, dependent upon successful completion of approved courses and availability of funds. For more information on this program please click here
