PlayStreets Chicago in Full Summer Swing
Now in its fourth year, PlayStreets is a simple, uniquely-urban approach used by cities around the world to promote stronger, healthier communities by creating convenient access to safe play spaces. The program helps remind Chicagoans that play is possible when communities come together with creativity, some simple playground equipment and a desire to have fun. In 2014, more than 26,000 people took part in 140 events and thousands of residents have already participated in PlayStreets events this year throughout the City. These opportunities provide a traffic-free space for at least three hours, allowing residents to engage in sports and games, dance and other fitness activities.
Gads Hill Center, the Active Transportation Alliance, World Sport Chicago and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) Chicago are coordinating the events this year on behalf of the Chicago Department of Public Health. At the most recent CLOCC Quarterly Meeting, the Playstreets program was cited as a key tactic to transforming public space to create an opportunities for physical activity in neighborhoods with less access to parks and play areas. In 2015, more than 150 events have been scheduled, with more than half of those dates still remaining on the summer calendar. To find an event in your area, visit the Playstreets Event Calendar.
