CDM Speakers     

"Oppositional and Defiant Behavior"
This weekend, the CDM's Kushma Govindappa, M.D., will be presenting a session about oppositional behavior at the Parents Helping Parents mini-conference. The conference is at the Sobrato Center in San Jose on Saturday, August 29, she'll be speaking at 11:45-1:00pm. Please see the link for more information and registration details:
 
Child Development Chat:  "Tips and Suggestions for IEP/IFSPs"
Save the date -- Thursday, September 17, from 12:30-1:30pm -- for this popular chat that helps parents prepare to be an advocate for their children in the development of school educational plans and annual IEP/IFSP meetings. The Chat will be held at the Center for Developing Minds. Please bring along your questions and concerns to share.
Welcome to our new receptionist, Bianca Melendez!     

We are happy to introduce a new member of the CDM clinic team, Bianca Melendez, who is working as a part-time receptionist. Bianca helps to greet patients and their families, answer phones, and schedule appointments. Bianca is currently in graduate school studying Counseling at San Jose State University. She holds a B.A. in Psychology from San Jose State University.

Let's Play Together!
A Playgroup Supporting Social and Communication Development
A new early-learning program specifically for toddlers starts next month at the CDM. Designed to educate the whole family, the new playgroup is centered on teaching foundational social cognitive skills -- including joint attention, initiation and reciprocal communication -- through a shared experience with the child and the parents/caregivers.  The session begins on September 15, please see the link for details:
Meltdowns to Shutdowns
Many children struggle to cope with the stress created by the fast pace of their lives. Children with low thresholds for frustration, tendencies toward negativism, or difficulties tolerating losing or not getting their way, demonstrate this stress with an extreme emotional reaction (meltdown) or a closed emotional reaction (shutdown). This class will help children, ages 9-11, learn to recognize their feelings before becoming overwhelmed by them. The session begins on September 16, please see the link for details:
CDM Family Series:
A Guide to Your Child's Social Cognitive Development

"A Guide to Your Child's Social Cognitive Development" is ideal for families with children who may be experiencing a range of social cognitive challenges, including executive function issues, behavioral concerns, and social challenges that may be related to autism spectrum disorders, ADD/ADHD, sensory processing challenges, and others. This seminar incorporates current evidence-based treatments with practical suggestions. Parents will learn hands-on strategies for supporting and optimizing their child's social cognitive development. The group meets on Thursday evenings, beginning on October 15, please see the link for details:
Social Climbers Junior
Social-skills Group for Children
Social Climbers Junior is a developmentally appropriate, play-based group that allows children to practice skills such as initiating and maintaining social interactions, staying engaged in small group activities, emotional regulation, and self-monitoring. Class sessions include circle-time (with choice-making and sharing), direct teaching and practice of social cognitive skills, expansion and modeling of social language, and facilitated cooperative play activities.  Designed for children ages three to 5th-grade students, there are five class times to chose from. Appointments at the CDM 
 
Just a quick reminder that with school back in session, the popular after-school timeslots for follow-up appointments at the CDM get quickly booked.  Please be sure to get future appointments with Dr. Govindappa and Dr. Korb scheduled as soon as possible when instructed by our physicians.
 
Also, please help avoid last-minute medication issues and remember to allow at least a week's notice to process any medication refills!
