Meeting Need in a
Time of Crisis
Each year, on average, CAC, through the Howard County Food Bank, provides 23,000 Howard County residents with food for their tables.

Volunteer Opportunities
Front Desk Assistance | |
Responsibilities include:
- Monitoring and managing flow of visitors and clients entering the CAC office
- Answering phones
- Collecting documentation from clients
- Basic administrative duties
Qualified applicants must have strong interpersonal skills and maintain professional etiquette both on the phone and in providing in-person assistance. Basic knowledge of Excel and Word is required. Individuals who are bilingual are encouraged to apply.
Warehouse Volunteer
Responsibilities Include:
- Receiving, storing, and documenting food donations
- Professionally interacting with donors, volunteers and clients
Qualified applicants must have strong customer service skills and be detail oriented. They must be physically able to be on their feet and active for most of their shift and have the ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds.

Celebrating 50 Years
of Service
On March 16, 1964 President Lyndon B. Johnson stood before congress and proposed a nationwide war on the sources of poverty. One of the outcomes of Johnson's War on Poverty was the establishment of a nation wide network of community action agencies, local organizations with the independent boards and budgets that were to provide social services and advocacy assistance to low-income residents of both cities and counties.
Fifty years ago this October, the Community Action Council of Howard County opened its doors to provide resources to low-income households in Howard County. As Johnson intended, our mission was not simply to support people, but rather to give them a hand-up in an effort to allow them to develop and use their capacities.
As we prepare for our 50th Anniversary, we look forward to reflecting on the past in order to better prepare for the future of our organization, and the future of our community." Bita Dayhoff, President-CAC.
In the words of President Johnson, "Our fight against poverty will be an investment in the most valuable of our resources--the skills and strengths of our people. And in the future, as in the past, this investment will return its cost many fold to our entire economy."

MLK Day of Service
Volunteers Find Opportunity to Serve at Howard County Food Bank
On Monday, January 19, over 30 volunteers gathered at the Howard County Food Bank to make their day off, a "day on."
 
CAC was pleased to partner with Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission and Volunteer Howard to provide volunteer opportunities in celebration of the Day of Service.
Individuals and families were able to sort through 3 pallets and 2 bins of food, pack more than 300 Emergency Assistance Food Program bags, and stock shelves with an abundance of food for the day's distribution.
 
"We are grateful for every one of our volunteers for giving time to make this day so special. Each one was tremendously instrumental to the success of the day and presented the Food Bank and CAC as a place of warmth where hope is instilled and service is second nature," said Bita Dayhoff, President-CAC.

As Temperatures Drop, the Need for Adequate Weatherization is on the Rise
With temperatures at their lowest of the season, heating a home can be a high-priced endeavor. With inadequate weatherization the burden can be both costly for the family and taxing on our environment.
The CAC offers the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) to serve eligible low-income households by installing energy conservation materials in their homes. These measures reduce the consumption of energy and the cost of maintenance for the home.
Through the WAP, a single family home, on average, decreases their energy consumption by 32%. This reduces household expenses and decreases emissions of greenhouse gas.
In addition, the WAP provides heath and safety features, such as carbon monoxide detectors, smoke alarms, proper ventilation and minor, relevant, repairs.
CAC is pleased to have been able to assist 78 household in our fiscal year to date.

WAP is a program of the Community Action Council of Howard County.
Funding is provided by the U.S.Department of Energy, Electric Universal Service Program, Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, Washington Gas and participating EmPOWER Maryland utility companies.
