What made you decide to go through the LO program?
I had been on the Pleasant Ridge City Commission for several years and was a little burned out from the position and enrolled to see what I could learn.
What did you think you would get out of it? Inspiration for public service and leadership skill honing.
What did you actually get from the experience? The above, and then rather than stepping down as planned I ran for mayor and served in that position for over 20 years.
What would you tell someone that was thinking about the Cornerstone program? To do so if the time commitment and expected outcomes fit with your career or life goals.
Have you made any changes since your LO graduation? Am now a former mayor, but along the way became CEO of Kemp Klein and continue in that capacity. We also started our own charitable foundation, and our initial lead charities related to people I met in LO II (support of the then Oakland County Food Bank--we started the Food Fight on Big Beaver which continues today for Gleaners--and the Oakland Literacy Council.

Leadership is about Emotion

Make a list of the 5 leaders you most admire. They can be from business, social media, politics, technology, the sciences, any field. Now ask yourself why you admire them. The chances are high that your admiration is based on more than their accomplishments, impressive as those may be. I'll bet that everyone on your list reaches you on an emotional level.
This ability to reach people in a way that transcends the intellectual and rational is the mark of a great leader. They all have it. They inspire us. It's a simple as that. And when we're inspired we tap into our best selves and deliver amazing work.
So, can this ability to touch and inspire people be learned? No and yes. The truth is that not everyone can lead, and there is no substitute for natural talent. Honestly, I'm more convinced of this now - I'm in reality about the world of work and employee engagement. But for those who fall somewhat short of being a natural born star (which is pretty much MANY of us), leadership skills can be acquired, honed and perfected. And when this happens your chances of engaging your talent increases from the time they walk into your culture.
Let's Take A Look At Tools That Allow For Talent To Shine:
Emotional intelligence.
Great leaders understand empathy, and have the ability to read people's (sometimes unconscious, often unstated) needs and desires. This allows them to speak to these needs and, when at all possible, to fulfill them. When people feel they are understood and empathized something, they respond PERIOD and a bond is formed.
Continuous learning. Show me a know-it-all and I'll show you someone who doesn't have a clue about being human. Curiosity and an insatiable desire to always do better is the mark of a great leader. They are rarely satisfied with the status quo, and welcome new knowledge and fresh (even if challenging) input. It's all about investing in yourself.

A Message from the Director
We've Got Energy!!
What a year! The new Cornerstone class, LOXXVI, kicked off the year with a group of 55 high energy, 'go get-em', people. They have already held two social gatherings and the class project steering committee of 24 committed people has met and are off to the races. And that's not all. This year's Oktoberfest at Lafayette Market was a smashing good success. Nibbles, sips, shopping and good talk with great friends made for a wonderful evening. You could feel the energy in the room. But that's not all. Our Board is fully charged and engaged. They are so much more than a "get your name on the letterhead" kind of group. Watch for them to be involved throughout the year. And that's still not all! The LO team is running on high octane these days. Mardi, Susan, and Carol are on fire this year as they go about their work of serving our members, current class, Jr LO, and our many partners in the community. It is a fun place to be right now. We are all looking forward to bringing in the new Executive Director. The prospect of new leadership is exciting and energizing. Expect to see your great organization get even better over time. Whew! What a year!

| Oktoberfest was a success! |
Our Third Annual Oktoberfest was held at the trendy Lafayette Market in downtown Pontiac. Close to 100 people joined us to meet the new class, reunite with their class, network or just enjoy a warm October night. Guests enjoyed sipping on wonderful wines and Michigan beers. The Lafayette Market served delicious appetizers and provided a great venue for the evening. Special thanks to our event sponsor, Community Housing Network, who mingled with our guests and talked about their upcoming 'Adopt A Family' program as well as gave out information about their organization.
