Three years after Total Equity Now and partners began building the first-day-of-every-month Literacy Across Harlem Day movement, "Team TEN" is joining forces with #RockThoseReads friends and neighbors across the river to launch Literacy Across the South Bronx Day!

LITERACY ACROSS THE SOUTH BRONX DAY - LAUNCH EVENT - 10/01/15

Books & Breakin' in the South Bronx
Thursday, October 1, 2015
3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Corner of 163rd Street & Simpson Street
#RockThoseReads #SBXreads

Join Total Equity Now, Casita Maria Center for Arts & Education, and the Full Circle Souljahs hip-hop dance company, for a teen-led reading of excerpts from Bronx-native author Sofia Quintero's latest young-adult novel, Show and Prove. The life of "Nike," a South Bronx teen and one of the book's main characters, revolves around b-boying, so the Full Circle Souljahs will be on hand to demonstrate their world-famous moves!

This fun, free event also launches Literacy Across the South Bronx Day, a first-day-of-each-month celebration of reading and writing in the "Boogie Down"!

Stay tuned for the related list of books about the South Bronx that teens from Casita Maria will hand out that afternoon to fellow teens and other neighbors.

SUMMARY OF 4TH ANNUAL LITERACY ACROSS HARLEM MARCH

Last Saturday, September 19, in the spirit of Walter Dean Myers, Harlemites and friends took the #RockThoseReads movement to the streets in conjunction with Total Equity Now's 4th Annual Literacy Across Harlem March, Book Drive & Community Celebration.

One group traveled El Barrio's streets; the other navigated West and Central Harlem. Both handed out Harlem-centric reading lists and information about Harlem's 10 public libraries, chanted reading-related slogans, visited reading-related landmarks, and ultimately arrived at Marcus Garvey Park for a unified, community-building celebration of reading and writing.

Participants donated over 200 new and like-new "reads" for children and families living in Harlem shelters!

Artistic Partner:
Special thanks to David Borgonjon and his community-minded colleagues at Harlem-based The Laundromat Project for leading marchers in a bookmark-decorating project in conjunction with LP's annual "Field Day" activities. LP's bookmark templates were printed with black-and-white images of Harlem's reading-related landmarks, setting up LAH marchers to embellish those literary canvasses with markers and inspiring messages. The decorated bookmarks will be placed in some of the hundreds of books donated by marchers that day for children and families living in Harlem shelters!
