Message from the Executive Director

Integration Not Well Served by the 'Diversity' Catchphrase |
|
We have often bemoaned the word 'diversity' as "an empty signifier," even though we sometimes resort to it as a shorthand for the greater project of integration and inclusion. This issue was well considered in two recent articles in the
New York Times
and
Salon. Authors Anna Holmes and Ellen Berrey both express the concern that corporate and media uses of the word 'diversity' are at best weak indicators of interest in racial inclusion and at worst pretenses for real action.

Helping others is a critical component of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's Beloved Community - a place that South Orange and Maplewood continually strive to become. In support of that vision, the Community Coalition sponsors programs to develop and connect volunteers with local volunteer opportunities. If your organization has projects that need volunteers, submit them to us so we can assist. Projects will be shared with Civic Engagement Institute participants and in our annual Volunteer Service Weekend and Day of Service Fair, January 15 - 18, 2016.
