Shabbat Shalom
From Rav Tomer Ronen
This morning I told our students the story of Rifka meeting Eliezer at the well. I asked why Rifka's offer to draw water for Eliezer AND for his camels was taken as such a significant sign that she was the right match for Yitzchak.

A first grader explained that it showed how nice Rifka was. I agreed and took it one step further, explaining that she was actively looking for opportunities to help and to make others feel comfortable and cared for, even animals. After all, she wouldn't have been doing anything wrong by not engaging with Eliezer at all, drawing her own water, and leaving the well and it would have been nice enough for her to draw water for Eliezer alone.

Each one of us has many, many opportunities each day to do chesed and to help other people. Of course, there are the clear opportunities like giving money to organizations that feed the poor or help the sick. But there are also the everyday situations where each one of us can make a real difference in the life of just one person. For our students, I explained that recess on the playground is one of the best times for them to be on the lookout to do this kind of everyday chesed and then make the choice to take action. If they see another child who is by himself or herself, or who seems upset, it is a tremendous act of chesed for them to go to that child, invite him or her to play or ask if they are upset or sad and see how they can help. This is how we proactively care for one another in our BPY community.

This past week, our BPY community benefited from two incredible programs initiated by two members of our BPY staff who were looking out to do good and created something amazing that benefited many as a result. Thanks to Morah Jean Myers, dozens of volunteers came together last Sunday to clean up the Van Saun Mill Brook and create beautiful new trails for our students to use throughout the year. Morah Jessica Feiwus seized on an opportunity to bring Google Expeditions to our school so our students and teachers could experience this new technology and help Google improve it as they prepare to release it to more schools across the country. Taking the initiative to do good was also a theme that came up during our staff in-service day on Tuesday as we shared examples of BPY's core values in action in our classrooms and in interactions with our students. What an important lesson for our students, and for all of us as well.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rav Tomer Ronen

Google Expeditions!
Thanks to  Google Expeditions, students in grades 2-8 set off on immersive virtual field trips to places school buses could never take them....

Third graders started off by visiting different biomes - including tundras, tiagas, savannahs and deserts - as part of their study of continents and oceans. Sixth graders traveled to far away countries like Australia and the Philippines to explore different landforms, fourth graders went to Borneo to examine plant and animal adaptations, and seventh graders toured Aztec, Inca, and Mayan structures in Central and South America. Fifth graders got a unique view of earth....from the moon and eighth graders traveled to Gettysburg to supplement their study of American history. Second graders went on an ocean safari and had some close encounters with humpback whales, dolphins, and even some scuba divers.

Our Google  Expeditions leader, Simon, explained to our students that BPY is among the first schools in the country to get to try this new program! Our students' and teachers' feedback will help Google developers improve the Expeditions learning experience in schools around the country and the world!

View the recent CBS This Morning feature on Google Expeditions by clicking here.

Many thanks to third grader teacher Morah Jessica Feiwus for arranging to have this program come to BPY!

River Clean Up and Trail Making Event
Last Sunday's Mitzvah Day River Clean Up and Trail Making Event was incredible. Volunteers of all ages came together to remove trash from the Van Saun Mill Brook and surrounding woods and to create beautiful trails for our students to use throughout the year.

Thanks to the beautiful weather, our students were able to make use of the trails right away!

Todah rabbah to BPY science specialist Morah Jean Myers for her vision and for spearheading this effort and to the entire Myers family for their active support and involvement in this project. Thank you also to the Hackensack Riverkeeper for leading the effort on the ground!
Staff-in-Service
BPY teachers are learners too!

BPY teachers spent Tuesday learning and growing through a variety of professional development programs, including a session with Rabbi Bassous on teaching different Sephardic and Ashkenazic customs for Chanukah and a hands-on exploration of our brand new outdoor nature trails. Other modules included math practice standards. Reading Workshop, Hebrew language immersion, meeting individual student needs, transmitting BPY's core values, and more!

 Cookie Monster Math
C is for cookie...and circle, capacity, circumference, coefficient, counting, comparing and so many more math words! Monday was Cookie Monster's birthday! To celebrate, second graders played Cookie Monster math games, including "Who Stole the Cookie From the Cookie Jar?"
Hint, hint - it was our favorite blue cookie-loving monster :)

Nursery Friends Help First Graders Finish Their Hebrew Leaf Books
First graders wrote Hebrew books about the leaves of autumn to read to younger children and then nursery students helped them finish the illustrations. What beautiful collaboration!

Blasting Off in Kindergarten B!
Kindergarten B is learning about space and the different planets.
The children worked together to create planets to hang on their bulletin board and learned that each has its own temperature, color, and size. Then they built their very own rocket ship!

Third Grade Hebrew Production
Third graders put on an original play, all in Hebrew, about Eliezer's meeting with Rifka at the well. They performed for first and fifth graders during kabbalat Shabbat. Kol hakavod to the talented actors, set designers, costume designers, directors and producers and thank you to the enthusiastic audience!

Visit BPY's Facebook page for more pictures from the show and click below to see a short video clip from the musical finale of one of the productions.

Sixth Grade Prehistoric Art
After learning about prehistoric art, sixth graders created their own art in the same style. Several students even decided to replicate the experience of painting in a cave by getting underneath a chair or desk and drawing above their heads.  The class then discussed what the art tells them about the people who created it and their way of life.

Library Notes
Chanukah gift idea from our librarian, Mrs. Susan Levin:

"As thoughts of Chanukah loom ahead, ideas for gifts begin to percolate. I suggest purchasing magazine subscriptions (as well as books or book gift certificates) as fun and educational gifts for children.

There are advantages to giving a magazine subscription over a toy. No batteries are required; there are no little pieces to lose. Magazines are available for all ages, and they can be shared with siblings and enjoyed on Shabbat. Most subscriptions are monthly, so interest will continue, even after the first encounter. Keep in mind that it can take 4-6 weeks to get a subscription rolling, so now is a good time to start investigating. I recommend going to the public library and examining the children's magazine collection. You may need to check the publication information to find the recommended age range.

Did you ever receive a magazine subscription as a child? Wasn't it a treat to get a package with your name on it every month? Happy reading!"

PS - A great time to purchase books for Chanukah is at BPY's annual "Reading Rocks!" event at Barnes & Noble on Sunday, December 6!
BPY Bar/Bat Mitzvah Projects
A message from BPY 6th grader Dahlia Ramirez about her bat mitzvah project:

When I grow up, I want to be a scientist who finds cures for childhood diseases. Right now, for my bat mitzvah project, I want to help sick kids feel better.

Bears From Bergenfield collects gently loved bears and other soft stuffed toys, raises money to pay for shipping and delivery in Israel, and donates hundreds of toys every month to children in hospitals in Kfar Saba and elsewhere in Israel.  Volunteers personally deliver the toys to sick kids!  The emergency room at Meir medical center says they have 100 requests EVERY DAY for toys for kids in their emergency room.

I hope to collect enough to fill their needs for a single day, and really appreciate your helping me by bringing your used toys! You can drop off at my house, at BPY until next Friday, or at Netivot Shalom this Shabbat. You can also help by donating funds to defray shipping costs. I will collect donations made out to "Bears From Bergenfield," a 501(c)3 non-profit. You can mail or drop off at my house, 277 Johnson Ave. Teaneck, NJ 07666.

Thanks for your help!  Love, Dahlia Ramirez

4th Grade Girls Bake Sale
What better way to foster a sense of community and love for one another ( achdut) than a group chesed project?

One day at recess, a group of fourth  grade  girls came up with the idea of a bake sale as a way of doing chesed. They decided they would donate their proceeds to Magen David Adom, the Israeli ambulance service. Soon enough, all the  girls in the  grade got involved, planning what they were going to bake, creating a menu, etc.  The girls worked together beautifully, sharing ideas and helping each other come up with ideas of what to bake. Please show your support for this true act of chesed  by coming to their:
