Community Leaders Commit
to Greater Student Success at Advising and Completion Summit

The Alamo Colleges hosted 520 community leaders and educators at the Alamo Area College Access and Completion Summit on November 5.  This first-of-its-kind event focused on forging pathways among P-12 ISD's and counselors, college and university advisors, community-based organizations, community leaders, and university administrators. The keynote speaker, Dr. Charlie Nutt, executive director of the National Academic Advising Association,  spoke on "The Criticality of Advising in Student Success." Plenary topics addressed the critical role of advising and collaborative pathways from PK through employer in promoting greater student success outcomes.
 
The summit offered an opportunity for senior educational and community leaders  to come together to identify and begin to address gaps in student pathways.  A leadership commitment statement was signed by community leaders including:  Alamo Colleges' Chancellor Dr. Bruce Leslie; Mayor Pro Tem and Councilman Joe Krier; Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff; Peter John Holt, senior vice president, HOLT CAT; Kate Rogers, vice presdient of corporate communications and engagement, H-E-B; Molly Cox, president and CEO, SA 2020; and Dr. Diane Melby, president, Our Lady of the Lake University.

The Summit Leadership Consortium will compile the feedback, input, and recommendations gathered at the summit and prepare a report to be shared with participants and community leaders delineating the next steps to be taken based on a collective impact framework model.

To Improve Transfer Process for Students

of a partnership agreement to streamline student transfers.


At a press conference November 9, the Alamo Colleges and Schreiner University in Kerrville signed a formal transfer agreement that will help students transfer more easily between the two institutions without a loss or duplication of credits. Special guest for the event was Alamo Colleges - Northwest Vista College student Megan Eggleston who is planning to transfer to Schreiner in Fall 2016. 

Schreiner University President Dr. Tim Summerlin,  Alamo Colleges' Chancellor Dr. Bruce Leslie, San Antonio College President Dr. Robert Vela, Palo Alto College President Dr. Mike Flores, St. Philip's College President Dr. Adena W. Loston and Northwest Vista College President Dr. Ric Baser signed the agreement and answered media questions at the event. The partnership agreement with Schreiner University is the latest in the Alamo Colleges' growing list of agreements with universities in Texas and across the nation that expand educational opportunities for Alamo Colleges' students.

St. Philip's College students competed recently inthe Texas Cyber Security Awareness Week event.

Alamo Colleges - St. Philip's College Cyber Tigers Place
in Cyber Security Competition

November 6-7 in Dallas, five Alamo Colleges - St. Philip's College (SPC) cyber security students competed in the Texas Cyber Security Awareness Week event as the only two-year institution in the competition. SPC students Marcos Manriquez, Fortunato Maycotte, Henry Diaz, Reanna Paredes and Monica Duenas placed seventh in the field of 25 Texas collegiate cyber security teams. 

The SPC students, all members of the college's Cyber Tigers organization, also attended security, system hardening and penetration testing workshops for web systems during the two-day event held at The University of Texas at Dallas. SPC students were exposed to security concepts that expanded their knowledge of cyber security in order to broaden their future career opportunities.
