Guerin Day on Sept. 25 was a day of fun and excitement for the students, faculty, and staff of Providence. The day started just like any other day, bright and early at 8 a.m., but instead of a day of learning in classrooms, students rushed into the auditorium eager to see what events the day would hold. Senior wows crowd at Louisville's Got Talent contest

Senior Alex Duffy-Dries was just awarded the prestigious "People's Choice" award at a Louisville's Got Talent vocal competition. While her riffs, runs, and impressive range have captivated audiences at Providence over the past couple years through her involvement in Providence Singers, spring musical and other theatrical productions, she is not new to the game.

Senior opens own film production company
Senior Bailey Boyd loves to make videos. And not your average videos filmed on a cell phone and posted on Vine or other social media outlets. Professional videos. Commercials. Music videos. Science students think "inside" the box
Students in Mrs. Laura Swessel's A-day science classes were able to experience a variety of video demonstrations and hands-on activities when the Ivy Tech Get Mobile and Think Inside the Box STEM (science, technology, math and engineering) trailer came to school.  

The students spent 20 minutes in groups of 10 exploring the various engineering and robotics videos and interactive electrical displays. 

Two seniors named National Merit Commended Students
Congratulations to seniors Ryan Fansler and Emma Kempf who were recently named 2016 National Merit Scholarship Commended Students. This is the second highest national academic honor a high school student can receive.

Ryan is the son of Eric and Kellie Fansler of Georgetown and a member of Holy Family Parish. He is a member of the Quick Recall Team, Science Bowl, Koding Klub, Naturalist/Hiking Club, National Honor Society, the Pro Life Club and the House of Justice. He serves as the president of the Spanish/Recycling Club and is a Eucharistic Minister. Next year, he plans to major in molecular and cellular biology at Vanderbilt University, Johns Hopkins University or Washington University in St. Louis.
Emma is the daughter of Adam and Denise Kempf of New Albany and a member of St. Anthony of Padua Parish. She is a Student Ambassador and a member of National Honor Society, SADD, Hiking Club and the House of Truth, and she plans to participate in the spring musical. Next year, she plans to study accounting at either Butler University or Indiana University-Bloomington.


Commended student status means that from the more than 1.5 million juniors who took the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last fall, these seniors scored in the top five percent. They join about 34,000 commended students throughout the nation who are recognized for their exceptional academic promise.
Girls Golf advances to regional as a team

The Providence Girls Golf team had an outstanding season and finished its regular season schedule with a winning record of 43 wins and 13 losses. The team placed second at sectional, shooting a team-best score of 330 and advancing to the regional tournament in Washington, Ind. This is the first time a Providence Girls Golf team has advanced to regional as a team since 2007. This is such a big accomplishment, and the girls were excited to represent Providence at the regional tournament.

The PHS Girls Golf team finished its season at the regional tournament and placed 13th out of 18 teams. Junior Alexa Wilson carded an 84. While the team did not advance to state, it was a great day to celebrate their accomplishment of getting to regional as a team. The team graduates six seniors, including four varsity starters: Maryann Fitzpatrick, Colleen Geldermann, Brooklin Grantz and Nicole Kruer.

Students to portray characters at zoo event
Several theatre students will be working part-time next month at the Louisville Zoo's World's Largest Halloween Party event. The students will portray characters on a trail featuring characters and treats throughout the zoo. The dates of the event are October 2-4, 8-11, 15-18, 22-25, and 29-30. The event starts at 5 p.m., with the last entry at 8:30 p.m. The event is quite popular, so advance purchase of tickets is recommended, either at Meijer stories ($8) or from the zoo online ($9/$1 for members).

Students working the Halloween event include seniors Kate Cummins (Rapunzel), Alex Duffy-Dries (Mascot), Nick Long (Prince Eric), Sophia Purcell (Olaf), Maria Schmidt (Mascot) and Maresa Kelly (Mascot), junior Joe Bivens (Tin Man) and sophomore Eli Lucas (Peter Pan and Mad Hatter).

Many sporting events over fall break

Students may be out of class for the next two weeks on fall break, but many of our student-athletes will still be working hard.  Here is a list of home games and post-season contests to attend for those in town:
  • Boys Soccer will host sectional beginning Wednesday, Oct., 7, with the No. 4-ranked Pioneers facing Lanesville at 5 p.m. The finals will be Saturday, Oct. 10, at 2:30 p.m. Admission is $6 per game, or $9 for an all-session pass. The regional will be played Thursday, Oct. 15, at Switzerland County High School, with finals on Saturday, Oct. 17.
  • Girls Soccer (ranked No. 7) will face North Harrison in game one of the Forest Park Sectional on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 6 p.m. (EDT). The finals will be Saturday, Oct. 10, at 11 a.m. Admission is $6 per game, or $9 for an all-session pass. The regional will be played Wednesday, Oct. 14, at the Lawrenceburg Sectional winner's home field.
  • Cross Country will compete in the Crawford County Sectional on Saturday, Oct. 10, with boys competing at 11:15 a.m. and girls at noon. Free admission.
  • Football will host Charlestown for Senior Night on Friday, Oct. 9, at 7:00 p.m. and will finish out the regular season at Clarksville on Friday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m.
  • Volleyball will host Louisville Male on Thursday, Oct. 8, with freshmen starting at 5 p.m., and Columbus East on Wednesday, Oct. 14, with freshmen starting at 6 p.m. The team will begin 3A sectional play the week of Oct. 19.

Good luck this evening to Boys Tennis in the Jeffersonville Sectional. The team will face New Washington at 5 p.m. with the finals tomorrow at 5 p.m.

 

Congratulations to the Cheerleading squad, which earned a fourth place finish at the Tri-West Invitational last weekend.

Vocal students showcase talents at Fall Concert
On Sunday, students in Providence Singers, seventh grade music and Choir-Musical Theatre class performed a variety of songs from popular movies for their second annual Fall Concert. Watch for future Providence Singers performance dates after Thanksgiving.

Homecoming photos available
Photos from the Fall Homecoming assembly and ceremony at Friday's game are posted on the Our Lady of Providence Jr.-Sr. High School Facebook page and can be downloaded. Parents of seniors in fall sports who were unable to attend the assembly may request a photo from the Advancement Office by emailing [email protected]. Congratulations to all who participated and who were voted into the court, including seniors Abbi Hamm, queen, and Alex Roederer, king.

Students donate items, raise money to help others
Students donated nearly 5,400 items for the Walk the Town donation to fill backpacks with toiletries and other items to help those in our area who are homeless. The House of Spirit led the way with 2,070 items, thanks to senior Taylor Hunton, who had been collecting items for several months and led all students in the donation of the most items. Next was the House of Truth, which turned in 800, and the House of Honesty with 770.

The students also donated money to the House Cup Charity Challenge, held in conjunction with the Boys Soccer Coaches vs. Cancer game and fundraiser. Last week during lunches, the students turned in their spare change to earn points for their House. The House of Spirit won, donating nearly $99, followed by the Loyalty and Justice. Altogether, the students contributed nearly $460, which was given to a Providence family affected by cancer.

The winning House for the first quarter will be announced after fall break once the First Quarter Honor Roll is posted. All other points for the quarter are tallied, and as of now, the House of Spirit leads with 505 points, followed by Justice with 400 and Loyalty with 311.

First Quarter grades, fall break and other news
First Quarter Report Cards will be available in Skyward tomorrow, Thursday. Parents, be sure to read also the email with First Quarter information from Dr. Mindy Ernstberger and other notices.

Fall break office hours
The Main Office will be closed Oct. 5-9 for fall break and will reopen Monday, Oct. 12, with reduced hours: 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Friday.

School resumes Oct. 19
Classes will resume on Monday, Oct. 19, which will be an A-day and a BLUE Day session schedule.

Parent/Teacher Conferences
Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held Monday, Oct. 26, with dismissal at 2:30 p.m. Teachers will be in their classrooms for conferences from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. No appointments are needed. Parents should enter through the Main Lobby to pick up their student's schedule with room numbers.

Plan for PSAT
Sophomores and juniors will take the PSAT on Wednesday, Oct. 28, from 8 a.m. to noon. Juniors will report to the Activity Center, and sophomores will report to assigned classrooms. They are to leave all backpacks, cell phones and iPads in their lockers. Students should bring No. 2 pencils and an approved calculator to the testing room.

Reminder CHIRPS permission slip due tomorrow
This is a reminder that CHIRPS permission slips are due tomorrow, Oct. 1. Additionally, seniors must have received their booster dose of MCV4, the meningococcal conjugate vaccine, by Oct.1.

Reminder for senior parents
Senior yearbook portrait and Baby Ad deadlines are Nov. 15. Senior yearbook portraits must be taken at Lifetouch or Whyland's, and appointments made after the deadline may incur additional fees. For information about purchasing a Baby Ad for the yearbook, click here. 

Join us for Deanery Night on Friday
All Deanery students and families are invited to attend Deanery Night on Friday, Oct. 2, during the Pioneer Football game vs. Mitchell High School. At halftime, football teams from the New Albany Deanery will be recognized, and the Southern Indiana Catholic and Clark County Catholic third/fourth and fifth/sixth grade teams will scrimmage on the field.

Deanery students in kindergarten through eighth grade wearing a T-shirt or athletic uniform representing their Deanery school or team will be admitted for just $1 when accompanied by an adult. Regular admission is $5. Game time is 7 p.m. Click here  for more information.  

Deanery Teacher Appreciation Dinner thank you
Earlier this month, Providence welcomed all Deanery teachers and staff for an appreciation dinner.  We extend our appreciation to all these educators, including our own teachers and staff. We also thank our parents who generously donated a variety of items for door prizes.  

Save the Date: Open House
Parents of current eighth graders and of sixth graders at St. John Paul II, St. Mary of the Knobs and St. Joe Corydon, please mark your calendars for Sunday, Nov. 1. Tours for prospective junior high students will begin at 1 p.m., and tours for prospective high school students will be from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Please plan to attend!

BLUE PRIDE ON DISPLAY

Providence grads continue to grow, serve, succeed 
With nearly all of our graduates choosing to pursue higher education after high school, it's not unusual to hear stories of their carrying forward what they learned at Providence. Most do well in college and graduate to pursue a successful career. A few have extraordinary experiences, either in their faith, academic or athletic paths. Some school years begin without much fanfare and others begin with changes, construction and improvement galore.  New tennis courts, new baseball field, new chapel, and construction related to the relocation of the cafeteria to the activity center are highlights this year.  However, students from 20 years ago, the 1995-96 school year, encountered a whole different set of changes and inconveniences.  Step back in time and click here to read the rest of the story.
