It has been 7 years since the inception of the Amigos de Guatemala.
We can finally tell you that we have broken ground for the multi-use facility and clinic.   Over 200 people attended the ceremony. Their enthusiasm for the project is evident in their presence and resolve to see the building come to fruition. The people of Monte Margarita are responsible for some of the cost. They will sell coffee, mulch, and pesticide for their portion. They have also told us they will work 1 day each week with the builder's crew. You might ask why they are responsible for so little and we have to pay the rest. If you saw the abject poverty in Guatemala, you would ask how can they afford to pay anything toward the cost.
Our vision is to go to Monte Margarita once a year to conduct a medical clinic. We will invite other UCC conferences and congregations of other denominations to go other times during the year. Groups will be able to stay in the dorms so they won't have to travel 45 minutes one way to get to and from Monte Margarita or sleep in the coffee drying area as our team did. During these visits we not only want to conduct examinations but also hold sessions to educate the villagers about women's medical issues, HIV, nutrition and very importantly, the need for clean potable water. The clinic will house a water filtration tank so we will have potable water for medical procedures and drinking and cooking.
Have you thought about your Christmas mission project for 2015? If not, please consider making the Amigos de Guatemala your focus. Give the gift of healthier lives for people in Monte Margarita. Soon we will have a video/skit you can share with your congregations as well as other items to help with the Christmas campaign.
We have $65,000 already so we ask you to help us raise the balance of $45,000 we need to make our dream a reality. Share some of your wealth with those who have so little and are so grateful for a hand up. If you're thinking you can't afford to give anything, please remember what a friend of ours in Guatemala told us. "We are not poor as long as we can help others".

Gwilym T. Williams SCHOLARSHIPS Gwilym Williams Scholarship

If you are a college or graduate student who is preparing for a career either as a/an ordained minister, certified teacher or educator, doctor of medicine then you may qualify for a scholarship grant from the Gwilym T. Williams Scholarship Fund

This Trust Fund, created over a generation ago by a now deceased PNEC benefactor from Scranton, is administered by the Penn Northeast Conference of the United Church of Christ. The purpose of this Fund is to provide financial assistance for post-secondary students enrolled in accredited institutions of higher learning, and who are preparing to embark on a career either as an ordained minister, a certified teacher or educator, or a doctor of medicine.

Grants are limited by stipulation of the Trust to students pursuing one of these three career options, and who are also currently members in good standing of a PNEC congregation. Financial assistance will be awarded only to help pay the institution-stipulated costs of tuition and/or housing.

You are required to submit to the PNEC office all application materials (your application, certification of an acceptable program of study, your school's financial bill) before your request will be considered. Application materials must be in our office by October 1st in order to be considered for a grant for the (preceding) summer and/or (current) fall terms, and by March 1st in order to be considered for a grant for the (preceding) winter and/or (current) spring terms. Reimbursement checks will be issued directly to successful applicants. Even if you have received a Gwilym T. Williams scholarship in the past, you must reapply in order to be considered for a new grant. Applicants are awarded a maximum ten grants for undergraduate work, and ten (more) grants for post-graduate studies.

Please go to www.pnec.org to obtain the application packet.

Please note: your application will not be processed until all three application materials are received

in the PNEC office.

I am delighted to share with all of you the latest communication from your UCCOSSN! I would love it if you could share it with the local churches and association offices within your conferences.
Everyone who works in an administrative position within the UCC is automatically a member of UCCOSSN, an organization officially recognized by the national office with voice but no vote at General Synods.  We're listed at the back of the UCC Planning Calendar.  Our face and voice are growing in recognition, but we can't do it without the help of folks like you.....folks with their fingers on the pulse of your conferences.  We are all in the trenches together, working to support the UCC.  We support each other, teach other and care about each other.
We invite everyone to like our Facebook page, UCCOSSN on Facebook.  We are also in the process of redesigning our website and will be announcing the new URL very soon!
Please be a part of the growth of our organization.  We need you!  Enjoy your weekends!!
