Roxy Myers, PAWS Therapy Companion |
I always wanted to have one of my dogs become a Pet Therapy Dog. My daughter saw an advertisement in the newspaper for PAWS and showed it to me. I immediately signed up with my dog Roxy. Before I was able to attend training, I found out that I had breast cancer and needed surgery. My surgery was scheduled for the Monday of the same week training was to be held. I was determined that, no matter what, I would be attending the PAWS training that Friday. Just 4 days after having a lumpectomy, 22 lymph nodes removed, and a drain placed, Roxy and I attended the training session.
After we finished training and I was healed from surgery, we began to visit nursing homes and Team Tina/Roxy became very popular. During my chemo treatment at Tunnel Cancer Center, I was nominated by the nurses to be a part of their 2016 Calendar because of my inspirational story (Roxy will be pictured with me). They asked me what kept me motivated and how I had such a positive attitude through my cancer treatments. I said that it was because of my dogs and my determination to get Roxy trained as a Pet Therapy Dog.
My daughter, who came to help me during training, completed training, too, so that she could participate in the PAWS for Reading program with Roxy. They have been visiting the Lighthouse, which is for women with addictions, and have become very popular there, also.
On Wednesday, July 15th, Roxy and I achieved the Advanced level of STEX and we are now able to visit the Beebe Medical Center - our original goal! Our next adventure will be to visit at the Tunnel Cancer Center because I know firsthand how nervous people can be waiting for their appointment for chemo or radiation, and Roxy knows just what to do to make people feel better!
