June Maintenance Guidelines

After years of working in the industry and building a nursery business around Oklahoma's inclement weather, we are suggesting the following maintenance guidelines:

* Plant your (B & B) Ball & Burlap trees, shrubs, and perennials.

* Set out your annual bedding plants for summer color.

* Remove all dead branches on established trees.

* Apply ferti-lome Liquid Systemic Fungicide II to prevent and control Leaf/Black Spot on Red Tip Photinias, crape myrtle trees, and roses. See product label for other plant variety applications.

* Apply Marcum's Cedar Mulch to aid your plants in moisture control as summer is quickly approaching.

Chump's Chatter

Oklahomans love their Red Tip Photinas and crape myrtle trees!

Our phones at the nursery are ringing off the wall with customers wanting to know why their Red Tip Photinia and crape myrtle trees have dark reddish halo spots with gray centers on their foliage.

Our tree and shrub experts have the answer and we have the solution!

Dahlia's Answer: Leaf Spot Fungus (Entomosporium) commonly referred to as Black Spot Fungus.

Dahlia's Dirt!

Leaf Spot/Black Spot Fungus: What Is The Recommended Treatment?

Our tree and shrub experts at Marcum's Nursery recommend
ferti-lome's Liquid Systemic Fungicide II.

Leaf Spot Fungus, also known as Black Spot Fungus, is going to be more prevalent this summer due to our recent excess rainfall in Oklahoma. Even if your photinia or crape myrtle's foliage isn't showing signs of Leaf Spot, we're suggesting this product and treatment as a preventative.

If the darks spots have gray centers, this confirms the fungal infection. If present, the fungus will spread to the branches and may cause cankered areas to the bark. Heavy infections will cause premature leaf drop.

Because the fungus over winters on infected leaves and branches from the previous year, it's crucial to remove all infected leaves and branches from beneath the tree to minimize the chances of spreading the fungus.

Sherry's Cucumber Dip

Kick off the first days of summer with life long friends and Sherry's fresh cucumber dip.

Sherry came into my life many years ago and we recently reconnected. As true friends do, we immediately began sharing our favorite stories when we first met, and of course our favorite shared recipes.

Sherry introduced this recipe to me over twenty-five years ago and it's an all time summer favorite of mine.
