Bugle Calls
Issue No. 1029
November 2015
As the Thanksgiving Holiday draws near, much has been said and written about the importance of thanking God for all of the blessings which He has bestowed upon us Bob Bugle-B-1001including our lives, our families, our health and our freedom as Americans. Yet, each successive year threatens to make Thanksgiving a  forgotten holiday. Anymore, we seem to segue straight from Halloween to Christmas, with a big meal and a lot of football on television somewhere in between.

Because we here at Bugle Media Services believe it is imperative that we not lose site of the real meaning of the Thanksgiving Holiday, and because it's also important to say "Thank You" on an ongoing basis to all those who make our professional success and growth possible, including employers, associates and customers, we have decided to start our own Thanksgiving Holiday tradition.

The following articles and video are being "repurposed" from our November, 2014 issue. Every year, the November edition of Bugle Calls will focus on the concept of Gratitude, and why being thankful is good for us and good for business.

Why Being Thankful is Good for Us and Good for Business
By Bob Bugle
Bob Bugle-B-1001 Thanksgiving has traditionally been one of America's favorite holidays. Abraham Lincoln receives credit for establishing a national Thanksgiving Holiday in 1863, hoping in part that the establishment would help to heal the wounds of a divided nation. On December 26, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a joint resolution of Congress, for the first time making the date of Thanksgiving a matter of federal law and fixing the day as the fourth Thursday of November.

Most understand the origins of the Thanksgiving meal to have taken place in the Fall of 1621, when the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony famously shared a harvest feast with members of local Indian tribes who had taught the settlers how to grow corn.

How Gratitude Can Change Your Life
By Marelisa Fabrega
"If the only prayer you say in your life is 'thank you,' that would suffice." - Meister Eckhart

Gratitude means thankfulness, counting your blessings, noticing simple pleasures, and acknowledging everything that you receive. It means learning to live your life as if everything were a miracle, and being aware on a continuous basis of how much you've been given. Gratitude shifts your focus from what your life lacks to the abundance that is already present. In addition, behavioral and psychological research has shown the surprising life improvements that can stem from the practice of gratitude. Giving thanks makes people happier and more resilient, it strengthens relationships, it improves health, and it reduces stress.

Abraham Lincoln and the "Mother of Thanksgiving"
By Barbara Maranzani
Secretary of State William Seward wrote it and Abraham Lincoln issued it, but much of the credit for the proclamation should probably go to a woman named Sarah Josepha Hale. A prominent writer and editor, Hale had written the children's poem "Mary Had a Little Lamb," originally known as "Mary's Lamb," in 1830 and helped found the American Ladies Magazine, which she used a platform to promote women's issues. In 1837, she was offered the editorship of "Godey's Lady Book," where she would remain for more than 40 years, shepherding the magazine to a circulation of more than 150,000 by the eve of the Civil War and turning it into one of the most influential periodicals in the country.

"Thanks for giving us an insight into where we are going and what we need to do to keep up with our very 'mobile' audiences while using simple language that we can all understand and absorb."
