Historic Deerfield Fall Programs Focus on Archaeology and Historic Trades

Deerfield, Mass. (August 17, 2015)----There's something about the first signs of autumn that give a sense of "wiping the slate clean." From the crisp, cool mornings to the first days of school, autumn brings its own sense of renewal as the long, hot days of summer ebb away.  Here at Historic Deerfield this fall a robust schedule of historic trade demonstrations, educational programs and special events await visitors of all ages. 

 

The following is a list of upcoming programs and events at Historic Deerfield in September and October 2015. Unless otherwise noted, all programs are included with general admission.

 

Special Events

2015 ADA/Historic Deerfield Antiques Show

October 10-11

11 a.m. - 6 p.m. (10/10), 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. (10/11)

Deerfield Academy Hockey Rink. $15, free for Historic Deerfield members.

On Columbus Day Weekend,  the Antiques Dealers' Association of America, Inc., will once again bring together some of the nation's finest dealers for their annual art and antiques show featuring the best of 18th- and 19th-century American art, antiques and design.  Surrounded by the historic houses and quintessential New England village setting of Historic Deerfield, in Deerfield, Massachusetts, the ADA/Historic Deerfield Show provides customers with a fun and informative experience in antiquing and early design. The show is considered by both serious and casual collectors to be one of the year's most important. On view and for sale will be remarkable objects from the 17th through the 19th centuries that will improve the quality of any collection and the look of any home.  For more information, visit adadealers.com.

 

Archaeology Day in Deerfield

October 17, 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., Free

Enjoy an Archaeological Tour of Deerfield Village and a guided tour of the Old Burying Ground on Albany Road with Claire Carlson, Education Program Coordinator at Historic Deerfield. Both programs are free and open to the public. Part of Massachusetts Archaeology Month. 

 

Hands-On Learning 

 

Archaeology Lab

Saturdays and Sundays, September 12 - November 22

Drop in anytime between 12 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., History Workshop Building

Come and learn about the science behind historical archaeology. Visitors will help clean, sort, and identify artifacts. Learn about soil and explore a "shoe box" dig. Make some clay marbles based on archaeological finds to take home.

 

Homeschool Harvest Day

September 23

10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Visitor Center at Hall Tavern

Drop in anytime, pre-registration encouraged by September 16.

Homeschool families are invited to celebrate the fall harvest at Historic Deerfield. Help our hearth cooks prepare dishes, learn how cloth is made as you card wool and weave on a loom, visit the Sheldon House and the Wapping Schoolhouse, and enjoy a scavenger hunt. 

 

Focus Fridays

October 2, 9, 16, 23, 30

11 a.m.

The Focus Friday Series will pair inquisitive visitors with experienced guides to discuss an individual object in the Historic Deerfield collection. If you are a curious person who would enjoy conversation and guidance looking at an object with focus, join us each Friday in October at 11 a.m. New this season, Focus Fridays will include guided tours of the Old Burying Ground.  October 2: Old Burying Ground; October 9: Desk and Bookcase/Secretary attributed to Cotton White; October 16: Deerfield Blue and White Society Textiles; October 23: Two-handled covered Silver Cup by Gerritt Onckelbag; October 30: Old Burying Ground.

 

Demonstrations 

Open Hearth Cooking: Foods of the Fall Harvest

September 26; October 2-3, 9-10-11-12, 16-17, 23-24, 30-31

10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Visitor Center at Hall Tavern Kitchen

Autumn was a busy time in early American kitchens. The abundance of fresh produce needed to be processed and preserved for the winter.  Our cooks this fall will be cooking dishes featuring apples, pumpkins, and corn.

 

 

Historic Trades Demonstrations

Visitors will meet talented craftspeople and observe their work up close each weekend this fall with our Historic Trade demonstrations. Learn how a printing press was important to communication in colonial times. See a joiner use a series of tools to square, shape, and join separate pieces of wood into a single, strong window sash. Working with the head of fiery coals, watch the blacksmith deftly transform hard, shapeless metal into a graceful, functional object. Check the calendar for a schedule of specific demonstrations which occur on Saturdays and Sundays, October 3 - December 12. Included with general admission.
