Construction Highlight

Can you think of anything more exciting in Camp Verde right now, than watching the weekly progress of our new library being built? (Yeah, maybe we're a bit biased).

I am especially thankful this Thanksgiving month for the construction teams from BWC and the Town of Camp Verde working on this project. They are not just working to get the job done so they can move onto the next one, but routinely go the extra mile to make sure details on the project meet their logical ends. In other words, the invest their intelligence and experience into making sure the library is the best it can be. Thank you BWC - Bud Woodworth, Randal Ball, Jeff Dalgran and other all others whose names I don't know. Thank you, Ron Long, Deb Ranney, Robert Foreman and crew! We appreciate your excellent work!
Let's Talk About Veterans' Issues
A public dialogue and Veterans' Fair sparked by the screening of Debt of Honor
Friday, December 4 from 1:00p to 4:00p @Cottonwood Recreation Center

Let's Talk is the brainchild of Verde Valley Librarians collaborating to bring a series of facilitated community discussions to regional topics of interest. Through community discussion, understanding may be reached and solutions initiated. Look for future Let's Talk topics dear to Verde Valley residents like river recreation, water use, dark skies and more.

Verde Valley Libraries collaborate to kick-off the first in a series of community conversations with Let's Talk in December. A screening of the Ric Burns film, Debt of Honor: Disabled Veterans in American History will be followed by a moderated public dialogue and Q&A period. View the film, participate in the community discussion, and sample the variety of resources available to veterans in the Verde Valley.

Start with an informal Coffee with a Vet meet & greet and light snacks. Resource tables to include Yavapai College Veterans Education & Transition Services, Cottonwood Vetraplex, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Veterans Administration, the Veterans History Project, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, and more will be setup for veterans and family members to learn more about services available in the Verde Valley.

Debt of Honor  examines the way in which the American government and society as a whole have regarded disabled veterans throughout history, beginning with the Revolutionary War and moving forward to include the current conflicts in the Middle East. Discussion following the film will be moderated by Ellie Hutchison, Arizona Humanities Council with veteran and scholar, Dr. Dan Shilling, handling the question and answer period.

The kick-off Let's Talk program is made possible by Arizona Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities in partnership with Verde Valley Libraries: Camp Verde Community Library, Cottonwood Library, Sedona Public Library and Yavapai College Verde Campus Library. Admission and participation is free, but donations of non-perishable food items to benefit local food banks are appreciated. For more information call 928-554-8380.

CVCL to Participate in National Hour of Code
Friday, December 11 starting at 1:00 pm

Computers are everywhere, but fewer schools teach computer science than 10 years ago. With the Hour of Code, computer science has been on homepages of Google, MSN, Yahoo! and Disney. Over 100 partners joined together to support this movement. Last year, every Apple Store in the world hosted an Hour of Code and even President Obama wrote his first line of code as part of the campaign. This year, thanks to Wendy (our resident geek), we are hosting an hour of code too!

The Hour of Code, organized by the nonprofit Code.org and over 100 others, is a statement that today's generation of students are ready to learn critical skills for 21st century success. Please join us.

Congratulate & Thank Valerie Foster

After 20 years dedicated to Camp Verde Community Library, Valerie is retiring to go gallivanting across the country and enjoy herself (the nerve!).

Valerie started out her career in a field where written instructions and training were part and parcel of every new piece of equipment or procedure. She is ending it having adapted to a work environment requiring continual self-learning and interpretation of procedures and policies. She has done an excellent job of mastering the Technical Services/Cataloging position while maintaining her sense of humor and challenging the rest of us to rise to her level of attention to detail. While we will miss Valerie on the CVCL Team, we wish her many days of pleasure and peace as she pursues her personal interests.
Something New from Honey Rubin  The Philosophy and Physics of Forgiveness: a three-part series in December - Saturdays 12/5, 12/12 and 12/19 from 11:00a to 1:00p

Being unforgiving is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die - but what is forgiveness? What does it mean? How does it work?  Honey Rubin will explore the philosophy and physics of the virtue and attitude of forgiveness as it applies to everyday life. Participants will flex their forgiveness 'muscle' and learn to become an instrument for love and peace, for themselves and for those with whom they interact.

Rubin, whose long-term purpose is to make a difference to others, has made the study and practice of forgiveness a central part of her life since 1976. While on a quest for peace and understanding in a difficult situation, an almost poetic idea came to her: On the wings of forgiveness is carried all other wisdom. Rubin enjoys exploring that idea and sharing her journey with others.

To preregister and for more information about this event, contact Gerry Laurito at 928-554-8384 or e-mail [email protected].
