| What is SAFE? |
SAFE is the Student Section of the Association for Fire Ecology (AFE). SAFE was established in 2000 by graduate students at UC Davis from a variety of academic disciplines who shared a strong interest in fire ecology and related issues. SAFE now consists of a network of campus chapters from across the US. SAFE aims to provide students from diverse backgrounds with an open forum on fire ecology through which research can be shared, networks formed, and funding and information resources can be accessed.

SAFE page, including info on how to get chapter reimbursements, a listing of
current SAFE chapters, details on SAFE student awards and
previous winners, a
guidebook on how to start your own SAFE chapter, the SAFE
constitution, and other information such as national officers, upcoming events and deadlines, and training opportunities. And you can join SAFE's facebook page to get updated info on jobs, internships, and other opportunities.

th International Fire Ecology & Management Congress:
Advancing Ecology in Fire Management Nov. 16-20, 2015 San Antonio, Texas
The fire congress is a great opportunity to meet people, learn about current research in the fields of fire ecology and management, and share your own research. This year there will be a special session dedicated to student research. Be sure to check out the Fire Trek: The Next Generation session on Wednesday to support your fellow SAFErs. Activities & Opportunities at the Fire Congress:
Registration and Lodging
Students can register for the conference at a reduced rate of $175 by volunteering for just a few hours throughout the week. SAFE members looking for someone to share a hotel room with should contact Tim Ingalsbee to be put in touch with students in the same position. Regular registration and group discounted hotel room registration both end on October 15 (update: room discount has been extended while rooms last!).
SAFE Wikithon
SAFE is hosting a Wiki-thon in San Antonio from 12- 2 p.m. on Monday. Many articles related to fire ecology are short or non-existent on Wikipedia, so we will be getting together to help spread accurate knowledge. See flier for details.
SAFE Member Meeting
Come meet your fellow SAFE members on Thursday night of the conference! We will be hosting a get-together at 6:30 to get to know each other, eat pizza, share updates on our chapters, and elect new national officers.
SAFE Exhibit Booth
SAFE will have a booth in the exhibit hall. Stop by during breaks to help staff the booth, meet fellow SAFErs and get new ideas for your chapter, and maybe even recruit a few new students. Please bring promotional materials for your chapter- posters, photo albums, stickers, or anything else you might have.

| Call for New SAFE National Officers--Elections at the Conference |
The National SAFE officers will be handing over their positions at the congress in San Antonio in November. The national board consists of a President, Vice President, Secretary, and Training Officer. If you're interested in a position and cannot make it to the fire congress send an email to
[email protected] with the position you are interested in, your name, contact information, and a brief blurb about your background.

| 2016 SAFE Grants for Chapter Activities--Due December 15, 2015 |
SAFE chapters that are recognized through AFE are eligible for grants of up to $1,000. The application will go live in early November, so keep an eye out for an email from us with details.

North Carolina State University
We officially welcomed SAFE's newest chapter at the beginning of October. NCSU SAFE has great faculty support and student members from multiple departments within the university.
Colorado State University
CSU SAFE is stepping up its volunteer efforts this year by assisting the Colorado State Forest Service with Russian Olive removal and helping the TNC with prescribed burning on the Phantom Ranch Preserve. They are planning on sending a few students to the AFE Fire Congress in San Antonio, and a larger contingent to the Prescribed Fire Training Exchange in Nebraska in the spring.
