6 summer Fridays of community engagement, art, food, music, dance and games

The City of Oakland's Friday Night Live Program is now complete, as Friday, August 14th marked the final week of the festivities. Thank you Brigitte Cook and Shomari Carter of the City of Oakland for all your hard work in providing opportunities and access to youth and their families to build unity in a safe space.

The last week was themed economics where there was a job fair and resources for residents to learn about employment options and financial gains. AHC artists facilitated the mural, tying in  Ujamaa, the African concept of cooperation and collective advancement.

Marcus Foster Mural Project
Last week, AHC muralists and West Oakland youth began working on the Marcus Foster Mural Project, inspired by the art engagement that AHC facilitated at the City of Oakland's Friday Night Live Events.

For the past 10 days the team have been out in the neighborhood on the West and 29th Street block. They have been painting images and ideas from residents of unity, remembrance, self love, economics, community building, abundance, social justice, education, and dreams.

AHC is grateful to Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) for partnering with AHC as a key stakeholder in West Oakland to engage and employ local artists and youth to capture the visions and voices of residents in the neighborhood impacted by the Marcus Foster project.

Meet the artists, s top by and say hello if you are in the area. Today is the last day!

Also, OUSD is hosting a town hall meeting that will take place at Hoover Elementary School, tomorrow, Saturday, August 29th from 12pm-4pm about the Marcus Foster School Project. This meeting will begin with Mindful Drumming and will be an overview of what the school site will become after construction is complete. If you would like to attend, please RSVP  here .

Mayor's Youth Internship Program: Classroom to Career

AHC is finishing up its second year of participating in the Mayor's Summer Youth Internship Program, "Classrooms 2 Career", formerly known as the Mayor's Summer Jobs Program, providing Oakland youth the opportunity to work 100 hours, gaining equitable access to job experience and skills to take with them into the future.

AHC reached out to Oakland Housing Authority youth and placed them at various West Oakland businesses, such as The Lower Bottom Playaz, West Oakland Environmental Indicator's Project, YMCA, Basic Cafe, GO Public Schools, Westlake Music Camp and larger entities like the City of Oakland. They are in the process of finishing up their 100 hours of hard work.

These opportunities are designed to equip youth with a variety of skills. The program prepared youth to earn money, build work experience to add to their resumes and be successful in building and maintaining relationships with their peers and adults.

Don't forget about the Oakland Super Heroes Mural Project!

This September, the 3rd mural on West Street under the 580 freeway will begin. Stay tuned and donate  here !
