Heroes Saving Heroes: Digitizing Homeric Manuscripts And Why it Matters

You probably haven't even thought of the Iliad since your 9th-grade  English class, yet despite being well over 2000 years old it remains one of the great works of the Western canon. The earliest complete surviving copies--and the cornerstone of our modern translations--date from the Byzantine era, almost 1,000 years ago. In addition to the text of the poem itself, these manuscripts are home to several layers of commentaries and notes preserving editorial comments from as far back as the Royal Library of Alexandria. These notes are vital clues, both about the oral performance tradition from which the Iliad emerged and about the history of the text after it was written down, but many have never been properly transcribed or translated. Luckily, a team of cutting-edge Classicists is working on this problem.

On  Wed., July 22nd at 6:30 PM , Krissy Birthisel, summa cum laude from Brandeis University's Classical Studies B.A. program and  winner of the Eunice M. Lebowitz Cohen Scholar in Classical Studies in 2011, will present a program outlining recent work to produce and publish openly-licensed high-resolution digital images of these manuscripts, and the amazing opportunities this opens up for new research.

No reservations or previous knowledge of the Iliad or   medieval manuscripts is required.

Bingo Anyone?

When was the last time you played Bingo?  If you play your numbers right at KFL Bingo, you'll have a chance to win free books at one of our book sale!  Pick up a Bingo card and spin the Bingo cage for a number. There is one catch, though: for any square you land on, there is a library-related task to complete. Give it a try-it'll be fun, and you might just win a coupon for free books at one of our book sales! To give everyone time to play, Bingo will be played through August.

Technology Petting Zoo, or, How to Use Your Device

E-books and tablets are growing in popularity and devices are widely available with many different types from which to choose from. To help provide hands-on training with e-readers and tablets, the Maine State Library created a "Technology Petting Zoo" of devices. The devices in the petting zoo are: Kindle PaperWhite (e-reader), Nook SimpleTouch (e-reader), Kindle Fire (tablet), Nook HD+ (tablet), Google Nexus (tablet), and Apple iPad Mini (tablet).

Come to the library to learn more about these devices and how to download books on to them. Bring your own device if you have questions. No reservations are needed for this program on Thursday and Friday, July 30th and 31st.

It's Card Renewal Time!

We've said it before, and it's hard to believe that we've been part of Minerva for a year now! Our patrons have come to love the convenience of finding the book of their choice, and if it is not at KFL, it will be in their hands within a few days.

Once a year we will ask you to update or confirm your contact information. Even if you haven't moved, we still need to ask - we might have typed something in wrong or confused your mailing address and your physical address. All card renewals will need to be done in person rather than on the phone or online. The whole process takes about 30 seconds.

If you've moved in the last year, we will need something official showing your new address - your driver's license, a bill, a lease, etc. - as we did when we first opened your account.

Starting in this month when you come in to check items out, we'll notify you if your expiration date is approaching; most cards can be updated before they expire. Even if your card does expire before we catch it, the effects are minimal. You won't be able to renew or request items online until the card is updated. If you renew online when your expiration date is less than two weeks away, Minerva will use your card expiration date as the due date, rather than giving you a full renewal period. Other than that nothing changes - anything you put on hold before the card expired will remain on hold. Just stop in to update your information, and everything will be reactivated instantaneously.

As always, please call (207-958-2173) or email us if you have any questions.

Maine State Park Passes at the KFL

The Library is pleased to offer its patrons free passes to the state parks in Maine. The Library has purchased two vehicle season passes; each will admit a driver and occupants, up to 17 people total. We hope that by providing park passes, our patrons will be more able to enjoy the great state of Maine.  pinecones.jpg

The Library anticipates a large demand for these passes and has created guidelines for their maximum use. A pass may be checked out to a patron for up to three days with no renewals, and return it to the Library at the end of the third day. The passes are not part of the Minerva borrowing system and therefore cannot be reserved, and they are subject to availability. However, we will hold the pass for a couple of hours so that the patron may pick it up. To ensure that pass will be returned in a timely manner for others to use, a $5 fee will be assessed for each day late that the pass is returned late. The passes cannot be used toward camping in Maine State Park campgrounds, and they are not accepted at some parks.

For more information, please call the library at 985-2173 or email us
