Wanted:  A Place to Stay

As you probably know, fostering is the heart and soul of American Greyhound's
mission to save unwanted hounds and finding them their forever homes. A foster home is a greyhound's first stop on their journey to a new life. Our foster homes supply all the love and comfort needed for a smooth transition from their former life to their new life as your family member! 2015 has been off to a phenomenal start.

Last month, we filled the hauler to the MAX with greyhounds from Kansas. With
your help, we can keep that momentum going all year. American Greyhound
provides foster homes with all the supplies and support you will need. I know that
2015 will be American Greyhound's best year yet, but we can't do it without you.
Contact me about fostering today. American Greyhound wants YOU to be a part of our fostering family.

A New Volunteer Opportunity

Hello fellow Greyhound fans! There have been many articles featured that have been authored by awesome American Greyhound foster parents in past newsletters, and I wanted to take a moment to thank all those volunteers who have opened their hearts and homes to Greyhounds in temporary need while awaiting their lucky day to join their forever families. Fostering really is a wonderful way to positively impact not only hounds in need, but their new families as well. All Greyhound rescue adopters have a foster parent(s) or family to thank for making it possible to welcome our much-loved Grey family member(s) and changing our lives for the better!

American Greyhound has many, awesome volunteers in their ranks but is always thrilled to welcome additional volunteers; and there are so many ways to volunteer AND to benefit from being more personally involved with a rescue you love and respect like American Greyhound! Active in many Indiana cities, including Valparaiso, Elkhart, Merrillville, Highland, and Goshen as well as northern Illinois cities like Homewood; in all these areas, AmericanGreyhound fosters development of sighthound communities that are rich in knowledge of and passion for Greyhounds and the dedicated families who enthusiastically welcome Greyhounds to nose right into their lives and hearts.

American Greyhound and its volunteers have so much to share: expertise, passion for the breed, veterinary service recommendations, insight on the fun you can have with your Greyhound - and the list goes on! It is great to be a part of such a wonderful community, and American Greyhound is now affording those who live in the Champaign Urbana(C-U) area an opportunity to become actively involved in making a difference in Greyhounds and their new families' lives!

If you would like to foster, or maybe even serve as a short term stay foster (like just spending a day with an area foster grey or welcoming a foster for a couple overnight stays if their official foster has to be out of town briefly) please contact Nicole Graves(the foster coordinator - [email protected])for more information about fostering and joining the foster home service ranks.  If you would like to participate in meet and greet events, or have othert houghts and ideas on sharing American Greyhound as a resource with others, please reach out to Melissa Pearman (the events and volunteer coordinator -[email protected]),and/or touch base with Tamara (a C-U area Greyhound enthusiast [email protected]).  Come on C-U area residents, how about we come together with American Greyhound to make a difference in even more Greyhound lives!?

Broodie
Broodie, a word that defines a female greyhound who had a good racing career and at the end of it was used for breeding.

I met my first broodie on a trip to Alabama to get greys for American Greyhound. Her name was Leia, and she peered out of her cage at me, tail wagging. Then, Leia smiled at me, my heart was stolen. Leia came home with me for fostering and retirement, she had a huge heart, a happy wagging
tail, and she smiled. Leia, was a lot older physically than her real age, but she never failed to smile. Leia had a difficult spay surgery due to her physical condition, and unfortunately suffered a stroke shortly after and didn't make it.  She was with us for 6 weeks and took a large piece of my heart with her.

Would I foster a broodie again? Absolutely!!  Her name was Maranda, full of spunk and sass, she didn't know a stranger. Maranda was bred, but was never able to carry a successful pregnancy, she came into AG and made us laugh with her silliness. Maranda is now in a loving forever home with her Mom & Dad, and a grey brother. She makes them smile a lot with her goofy personality.

Another broodie recently stayed with us, Carolyn, a sweet gentle soul, who literally slept and ate her first week into retirement. Carolyn slowly opened up over her weeks with us, she learned after several days it was okay to take a treat from a hand, rather than sitting it on the floor for her to eat. Carolyn learned what toys were, and how to shake the heck out of a blanket. Carolyn left us last weekend for an adoptive home and is doing greyt.

If you can foster a broodie or open your home and heart to adopting one of these senior girls who make incredible companions, you certainly won't regret it. There is nothing compared to the love, companionship and smiles these old ladies will bring to you!
Do You Love Art AND Helping AG?
If you're looking for a perfect art piece for that blank space in your kitchen, or a special something for the art lover in your life, we have two art deals for you to check out.  Both of these options mean you get quality artwork and American Greyhound gets a donation! It's win-win!

Melissa Washburn
I will capture the personality of your Best Friend in a custom mixed-media portrait using ink, watercolor, and gouache. Available in 5x7" ($45), 8x10" ($60), or 11x14" ($75) on high quality watercolor paper, suitable for framing.

Portraits take 6-10 days to complete, and I will provide a sketch for your review before creating the final artwork. It's best if you can provide me with at least 2 high-quality photos via email so that I can get a good sense of what your dog looks like and recommend the best composition.

A Hearty Thank You
In January, we received this "Thank you" from the handlers of TGIE, The Greyhound Inmate Experience.  We wanted to pass it along to you as the thanks in fact go out to every one of you who support the program, have adopted the graduated hounds, who donate treats at our annual picnic for the hounds inside the wire, and for those whose continued support of American Greyhound allows us to continue to participate and support TGIE.  As the letter notes, over 300 retired racing greyhounds have passed through TGIE since it's inception (Greythounds of Eastern Michigan and Allies for Greyhounds, also participate in the program, so "only" 135 of the dogs have passed though our adoption programs).  Those 135 American Greyhound dogs have allowed us to rescue more overall dogs as we have not had the need for foster homes while these were inside the prison.  And, due to the diligent work by our Adoption Coordinators, many of these dogs go directly from the prison into their adoptive homes on the same day they are released.

TGIE has been a win-win for everyone involved and we look forward to many more years of participation in the program.
