October, 2015
The East PTO Digest is a monthly recap of all the great activities, events, and initiatives the PTO sponsors. Special thanks to Darlene Martin, Beverley Vernon and Michelle Parker for their contributions to this month's edition. We hope you enjoy it!
Out and About
Plimoth Plantation Field Trip
As part of the Third Grade curriculum on the Wampanoags, the PTO sponsored a field trip to Plimoth Plantation, which explored what 17th century life was like for settlers of Plymouth Colony.
Events

Composting and Chickens 101
East School Parent Judy Kwong hosted East families at her home on October 18 for an informative chicken and composting tutorial.  This event was sponsored by the Green Committee and provided tips for families interested in raising chickens or starting a compost at home.

Visit with Musician David Coffin
David Coffin visited with the Third Grade and demonstrated his collection of Early Wind instruments.  This annual event ties into the Third Grade recorder curriculum with Mr. Pearson.

Halloween Party
Thanks to Ellen Larkin, Jennifer Doan and all the parent volunteers, East School students had a blast at the Halloween Bash last Friday night. There was dancing, ghoulish costumes, freaky fun, scary games and devilish pizza.
First Appeal Prizes Awarded
Gym Teacher for Your Class

At the last All School Meeting, the PTO drew the names of 6 winners of the first Annual Appeal prize: Gym Teacher for your Class!  All of the students whose families have already donated to the PTO Appeal were entered into a raffle and one student from each grade was picked. The students were awarded a whistle and the privilege of teaching their gym class for a day.

Donate by November 19th to have your child entered into next month's drawing: Pancakes with Mr. Keady and Mrs. Case!
Getting To Know . . .
Darlene Martin (First Grade Teacher)
Q:  What do you enjoy most about teaching?
A:   I enjoy teaching for many different reasons. I love the enthusiasm that children bring to the classroom everyday. It is a pleasure to instruct and guide children to learn, apply and master new skills. One of the greatest joys of teaching is that you can inspire future generations by helping children become passionate lifelong learners. I especially enjoy hearing from my former students and learning about their accomplishments. I am truly fortunate to have a career that is rewarding on a daily basis.

Q:  If you weren't teaching, what would you like to be doing?
A:   If I didn't become a teacher, I would have explored options in the Health Field. I am passionate about nutrition and physical fitness. I love to explore different fitness classes and read articles and books related to healthy food choices.

Q:  What is your favorite book?
A:   The Power of Giving, written by Azim Jamal and Harvey McKinnon is one of my favorite books. This book provides practical ways in which we can make a difference in the lives of others and ourselves.

I enjoy fostering a love of reading with my students. We have many favorite book titles in our classroom. The favorite student pick this year has been The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt.

Q:  What is your dream vacation?

A:   My dream vacation includes the opportunity to relax and experience the unique attractions specific to the destination. I would love to visit different national parks in the United States. I also enjoy traveling abroad and learning about new cultures and history.
