BHC-SK's Recreation Action Team is Doing Great Work!

Over the last three years, BHC-SK has developed resident and youth empowerment to be leaders and advocates for their communities. Residents are participating in decision-making processes that impact the health of their community by ensuring that parks and streets are safe places for South Kern families.

Park Accomplishments

The Recreation Action Team is currently working on implementing changes to DiGiorgio, Lamont and Rexland Acres parks based on the Master Plans that were created for each. Which means that in the next few months, Lamont Park will have a new walking path along with new exercise equipment, playground, lighting, and benches.

The team also worked towards implementing a permit-based ordinance that limits the use of alcohol at DiGiorgio and Rexland Acres Parks, and was approved by the Kern County Board of Supervisors. Also approved by the Kern County Board of Supervisors were designated smoking zones that limit smoking to parking lots at DiGiorgio, Lamont and Rexland Acres Parks.

Bikeability/Walkability Accomplishments

BHC-SK's Recreation Action Team secured $261,000 through the Transporation Development Act to construct sidewalk, curb and gutter construction on the west side of Highway 184 from DiGiorgio Road to Panama Road.

The team also established the Arvin Bike Kitchen to raise awareness of alternatives to driving and promoting biking to increase physical activity.

Community Cohesion

BHC-SK 's Recreation Action Team helped establish two community gardens in Arvin and Greenfield. In addition the team has planned a catalog which identifies fitness activities throughout South Kern. The team also planned the installation of three murals: DiGiorgio, Lamont and San Diego Parks.

Building  Healthy Communities, South Kern held its annual celebration on Saturday, August 23rd. Over 400 community members attended the celebration. Buses from throughout South Kern shuttled festival goers to Rexland park for a day of fun, food and community. Attendees were directed to the various booths offering services and information to help make a positive change in their community.

Refugio Valencia a South Kern resident and BHC-SK volunteer, not only enjoys the greater sense of community being fostered, but also the active participation of a growing number of community members in carrying out their goals has increased during his time living in South Kern.

"One of the biggest changes I've noticed is how many people are interested and invested in the work being done and supported by BHC-SK, and this has been growing because of the good changes we've seen," said Valencia. "It's great to see more and more community members get involved in seeing our own vision of the community fulfilled."

Meet Patty Gonzales, Recreation Projects Coordinator

Patty Gonzalez is the new Recreation Projects Coordinator. Gonzales was born and raised in Oxnard, California until her family moved to Arvin, California during her sophomore year of high school. She graduated from Arvin High School then attended California State University, Bakersfield where she earned a bachelor's degree in Psychology, and a Master's in Educational Counseling.

What do you hope to achieve as the Recreation Project's Coordinator in this coming year?

This year, I hope to continue with the momentum that the Recreation Action Team had before there was a change in staff. I hope to engage youth throughout South Kern as well as promote youth advocacy. During the process, I hope to help make our communities healthier and safer.

What inspires you?

My inspiration is my family. Watching my parents overcome obstacles, barriers and hardships gives me faith that anything is possible.

About Us

Building Healthy Communities is a comprehensive community initiative that is creating a revolution in the way Californians think about and support health in their communities.  Residents are proving that they can make health happen in their neighborhoods, schools and with prevention-and in doing so, they are creating a brighter future for their children.

Over 2,000 residents, youth, businesses and organizations are leading the BHC-SK effort to positively change the health of our communities through a shared vision, goals and action plan. Residents in Arvin, Lamont, Weedpatch, and the unincorporated areas of Greenfield are proving that we have the power to make health happen in our communities.

BHC-SK is promoting healthy change in the areas of:

  • Education: Improving education from pre-K through adult education
  • Environment: Creating a healthy environment with clean air and water
  • Health Access: Increasing access to a better health care system
  • Recreation: Improving recreational activities, facilities and parks

We have the power to build healthy communities for the next generation.
