Dear Friends:
E-2 Treaty Investor non-immigrant changes proposed

A new Bill is being proposed by Congressman David Jolly that could allow E-2 Treaty Investor non-immigrant visa holders to get a Green Card after 10 years and their children aged 18-26 could work in the USA.

According to the proposals, the E-2 visa holder needs to have lived and successfully worked in the USA for at least 10 years. Full time employment must have been created for no fewer than two individuals. There will be a limitation of 10,000 visas in any fiscal year. Children can work from 18 and stay in the U.S. until 26 and children 26 years of age or younger would automatically be covered if the E-2 Visa is converted for their parents.

You can help by contacting your Congressman and asking them to support the Bill.

Only US Citizens can vote
native and citizen of Peru who voted in an election in November 2006 involving candidates for Federal office is in violation of the law and is removable under Immigration and Nationality Act (2012), regardless of whether the alien knew that he or she was committing an unlawful act by voting.

The respondent applied for an Illinois driver's license and signed a voter registration application in which she checked a box indicating that she was a United States citizen. The respondent filed an application for naturalization in 2007 in which she indicated that she had registered to vote and had voted in an election in the United States. The DHS also charged the respondent with removability as an alien who falsely represented herself to be a United States citizen. The Immigration Judge found that the respondent was removable on both charges.
Client Profile
Greenscapes Website

Janis and her husband Tony arrived in Sarasota in November 2011 from the UK. They came on to enable Janis to take over her management consultancy company's US office.

In March 2012, Tony bought a landscape maintenance company which he renamed Greenscapes. Now Tony is the Finance Director and Janis has assumed the role of Greenscapes' Business Development Manager.

Their biggest challenge was:

"Taking over a company which had been run-down and mismanaged.  We spent the first month or so opening letters from customers cancelling contracts. We had to try to convince them we were a different company and they should continue to give us a chance."

Their biggest achievement has been:

"Taking a company from the dark ages to the forefront of business practice.  We now have computerized task lists on tablets with every crew, an employee handbook, best practice health and safety, a comprehensive customer database..... we could go on!"

The biggest difference between running a business is the UK and US is:

"EVERYTHING.  Although many of the differences can be explained by the difference in the type of business, some of it was just getting to grips with US HR law, Florida regulations, completely different tax, different government structures, etc. The other challenge was going from a place where we were someone, with a massive credit score and a long respected history, to being some place with no history, no status and no credit score."

Moving to the USA
airplace-takeoff-sunset.jpg
What's it like moving to the USA? Each month we'll cover a different topic to help you prepare for your move to America. Many things will be different to your home country, some will be similar, and a few things will be the same.

If you're opening a new business you need to be surrounded by professionals (e.g. an attorney, CPA, business broker etc). In fact you might need more than one Attorney!

A business broker will help you find a business, do the due diligence and prepare the transactional paperwork. You should also consider a business attorney such as Gary Kauffman from Band Law Group "A business broker helps buyers to find a suitable business.  But once found, a business attorney's job is to negotiate the contract, and to handle-the-mechanics of the closing process".

Sincerely,
Chris, Peter, and Victoria
