Happy Chanukah and Shabbat Shalom
From Rav Tomer Ronen
In this week's parsha, Miketz, we see the strength of achdut, unity. Even when accused of being spies, through Shimon's arrest, the demand that Binyamin be brought to secure his release and then Binyamin's being suspected of theft, Yosef's brothers stick together. We see clearly that they have learned this important lesson after their abandonment of Yosef so many years before.
We see this theme of unity repeated in the story of Chanukah and the Maccabim. Every one of them had different strengths and they worked together to achieve a seemingly impossible victory.
Our Israel theme for this year's Maccabiah echoes the centrality of unity as well. Our teams - Am Yisrael, Eretz Yisrael and Medinat Yisrael - represent the three things that unite every Jew in the world: the nation, land, and country of Israel.
I am so proud of all of our elementary and junior high school students for the incredible teamwork, leadership, ruach, and sportsmanship they exhibited today. Throughout all the different competitions and challenges, everyone maintained a positive attitude as they cheered on their own teammates, as well as their peers on other teams.
I want to give a special thank you and kol hakavod to Rachel Schenkler, our programming assistant, for coordinating and overseeing so many of this week's special activities - of which there were many. Todah rabbah to all of our teachers as well for making this week so exciting and engaging for our students.
With best wishes for a Chag Chanukah Sameach and Shabbat Shalom to all,
Rav Tomer Ronen
Rosh HaYeshiva

Shlock Rock Chanukah Concert
THIS SUNDAY at BPY
The perfect Chanukah experience for the whole family!
On Tuesday, Rav Ronen announced that we would be having a very important visitor coming to see BPY this afternoon - the President of Israel, Reuven Rivlin! The children lined up outside waving Israeli flags to welcome him as his SUV drove down Frisch Court. The chauffeur opened the door and he stepped out to announce.....MACCABIAH!!! Many thanks to BPY Director of Finance and Operations, Norman Ferstenberg, for playing the role of Reuven Rivlin to break out this year's Israel Maccabiah theme!
Students in grades 3-8 were divided into three teams: Red/Medinat Yisrael, Blue/Eretz Yisrael, and Yellow/Am Yisrael. Junior high students led the teams and helped coordinate many of the activities which included relay races, math competitions, candle races, songs, cheers, ruach, and presentations. Kol Hakavod to the Blue/Eretz Yisrael team for leading the pack with 1811 points!
First and Second Grade Maccabiah |
Students in grades 1-2 got to participate in their own Chanukah-themed Maccabiah as well. Each class became a Chanukah-themed team and they had their own relay races, built chanukiyot out of recycled materials, did science experiments, and held a chidon Chanukah. A great time was had by all!

Every day during Chanukah, Rav Ronen lights our giant BPY chanukiyah with students and then leads them in Chanukah songs and dances.
One especially beautiful part of Chanukah at BPY is our communal Hallel. The sounds of hundreds of children singing Hallel can be heard throughout the building every morning. Click below to listen in!
Thank you to the BPY teachers and parents who opened their homes for class Chanukah parties! What a special and memorable way to celebrate the chag together!
Thank you to everyone who joined us at Barnes & Noble on Sunday for our annual Reading Rocks! event to celebrate reading and support the BPY library. Highlights included student poetry readings, story time with Morah Jessica, scavenger hunt, drama club performance, and candle lighting for the first night of Chanukah with Rav Ronen. Kol hakavod to the BPYPTO and all the volunteers who helped make this such a special day!
If you didn't get all the books on your list, don't worry - you can shop online at
www.barnesandnoble.com through Sunday and a percentage of your purchases will be directed to the BPY library when you enter 11738937 as your promo code. Happy shopping!
In the midst of all the special programming for Chanukah, third through eighth graders got to participate in Star Wars Hour of Code this week. They created their own Star Wars video games using Java.
BPY Early Childhood Celebrates Chanukah |
BPY early childhood was filled with the sights, sounds, and smells of Chanukah this week! Students played Chanukah games, did Chanukah art projects, cooked Chanukah foods, and loved celebrating the holiday together!
