Welcome back!
TJ had a great year with so many
accomplishments! We again set the bar very high for our students and they continue to rise to the challenges! We increased our overall attendance by 2.2%. We ended the year with a 91.6% daily attendance rate with the SPF expectation of 90% or higher, as meeting the standard. Tardies held steady at 1.1%. We improved in 14 out of 19 areas we tested for AP and we are holding steady with our ACT scores. We saw great growth in our spring finals overall.

A Word from Superintendent Tom Boasberg
|
Boasberg addresses school leaders and outlines upcoming parent forums for the 2015-16 school year.
This school year, I will be hosting seven Superintendent Parent Forums throughout the school year. The parent forum has been a great way for us to communicate and connect with schools and parents district-wide.
The purpose of the Superintendent Parent Forum is to:
- Provide an opportunity for open dialogue with the parent community;
- Share key district initiatives;
- Provide information that will help parents better understand how to best support their child's success both at school and at home; and
- Give parents the tools to disseminate information learned at the Forums and share with the school leader and the wider parent/school community including, but not limited to, CSC/School Governance Council, ELA PACs and other parent leadership groups.
We ask that every school designate at least four parent/guardian representatives to consistently participate in the Parent Forums throughout the year. Parent Forum members must commit to attend at least five forums throughout the school year.

TJ football battles North Friday night for the first spirit theme game of the season.
After a summer of hard work and training, TJ's football team will play its first game of the year against North High School on Friday, August 28th. The game will take place at 7:00 p.m. at All City Stadium.

The first TJ PARTNERS PTO meeting of the year will be held on Tuesday, September 8th from 6-7:30p.m.. Please join us for a TJ Administration Panel and hear what's in store for the 2015-2016 school year. You will have the opportunity to ask the TJ Principals and Assistant Principals any questions you have on your mind.

Learning, Service, and Fun!
In June, five TJ students participated in an EF Tours Service Learning Program in Costa Rica. TJ students learned about the importance of mangrove trees and their importance and environmental impact on the entire world. We made a positive impact by planting trees. Hundreds of trees.
We worked together with students from 3 other US schools on a strip of land with the Pacific on one side and a canal on the other. Tropical, humid, but so beautiful!

When we were done, we played hard! Ziplining above a cloud forest; visiting a chocolate plantation and eating freshly ground chocolate; sampling at a coffee farm; visiting the beach; meeting students at an elementary school; kayaking; relaxing in hot springs.
It's so sad that you missed all the fun. But stop crying! The TJ PURA VIDA TOUR will return to Costa Rica in June 2016. If you are interested in joining the work and fun, please contact Señora Barber 720-423-7016 or

Educating Our Students
As part of the
Health Agenda 2015, one of the department goals for the Office of Social and Emotional Learning (OSEL) is to have the Signs of Suicide curriculum implemented to all of our 6th and 9th grade students
in Denver Public Schools.
Educating our students about how to take care of themselves and their friends is an important task. Students are most likely to talk to their friends when they are having a problem, and some students entering adolescence will experience a rollercoaster of difficult emotions. Depression (among the most common of mental illnesses) appears to be occurring at a much earlier age. Depression--which is treatable--is a leading risk factor for suicide. In addition, self-injury has become a growing problem among youth. While every student will not experience these feelings, any child may find themselves in a position to help someone who does.

What is Challenge Day?
- It is a one day (seven hour), action-packed, interactive program held in the gym at TJ; students, teachers, administrators, parents and other adult volunteers participate in a safe environment.
- Students, teachers, and parents own up to past behavior, apologize to each other, and make a pledge to "change their behavior.
- Students and adults participate equally and connect on a very personal level.
- Through these personal connections, students are engaged and empowered, and are inspired to be successful.
- Students' personal power and self esteem are elevated.
- Dangerous peer pressure is transformed into positive peer support.
- Teasing, violence and all forms of oppression are recognized and eliminated.
- The aftermath of the school climate is remarkably noticeable.

Time to get involved!
This is the third year TJ will have a Speech and Debate team and we are looking for new members. All students are welcome. The season runs from October - April/May, BUT you do not have to compete in EVERY tournament if you have conflicts! There are various events to explore from acting to debate to original speech writing and from individual to duet competition!
We will meet every Monday in room 228 and individually when needed. Our season begin in October with a month long of novice tournaments. Tournaments are usually on Saturdays, with Congress tournaments meeting after school on occasional Tuesdays.
The first meeting is scheduled for August 31
st
at 3:00 p.m. in room 228- hope to see you there!

Need help?
Clothing Resource:
Clothes To Kids, a non-profit dedicated to getting school clothes to needy kids from pre-school through 12th grade - at no cost to the families. They have an upbeat store in the south University Hills shopping area at Colorado Blvd and Amherst - next to Chez Artiste and under Tuesday Morning. Students qualify if they qualify for FRL, if they have a referral letter from a school, social service agency, counseling center or church, and if they have a crisis such as homelessness or displacement.
School Supplies:
Social Worker Samanda Davis has school supplies in her office if a student is in need. No appointment necessary; however, her days in the building are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday.
