An Interview with the
2015 | 2016 President
Casey Johnson, Euler Hermes

Question: What are your goals for our chapter this upcoming year?

Answer: "I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to be in the position I am in.  The past presidents have done a great job of keeping the momentum going for the chapter.  When I set my goals for the upcoming term, I looked at what would be most beneficial to the chapter.  Gaining new sponsors is one of the top priorities.  The sponsors bring a lot of value to the RMA by offering programming ideas, committee opportunities, and ideas on how to better serve our members.  The second goal for the year was to bring more of a focus on the programming and what will make our events successful.  We are introducing new venues, new events, and a more diverse offering for networking and education.  The programming for us is the channel to get our name out there and show people what we are all about."

Oktoberfest Event Recap
By: Peter Leto, Bodman PLC

On September 24, Brew Detroit graciously hosted the Risk Management Association East Michigan Chapter for an Oktoberfest-themed networking event.  In the spirit of Oktoberfest, the evening was filled with beer tasting, various appetizers, and a guided tour that showcased the art of making craft beer and delicious food provided by Slows Bar BQ. As expected, the event was well attended and an all-around, success.

A Quick Look into
Aviation Law
By: Amanda Pontes, Bodman PLC

Owning an aircraft, whether individually or through a business, creates significant exposure to personal liability. The natural response to this potential liability is to form a limited liability company to own and operate the aircraft - with the hope of isolating the risk in the new entity and shielding the owners from liability.  While this may be the answer for other high-risk assets, in the case of aircraft ownership, this strategy can actually increase personal liability.  Owning and operating an aircraft through single purpose LLC without consultation with aviation counsel can lead to illegal operation (albeit unintentional) of the aircraft. Unless they are well-versed in the Federal Aviation Regulations - which in this case are counterintuitive -- most owners (and their attorneys and advisors) are unaware of this issue until it is too late. If owners are operating through a single-purpose LLC without the necessary documentation required by the Federal Aviation Administration, the usual protections of an LLC will fall away.  Even worse, most insurance policies require compliance with Federal Aviation Regulations.  If an aircraft owner runs afoul of these regulations, such failure will render the insurance policy ineffective, leaving the owners totally exposed.  Therefore, it is essential that aircraft owners consult with aviation law experts to ensure that they are complying with the intricate rules of the Federal Aviation Administration.
