 Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln
May 2014

Community Partner Highlight

Lincoln Parks & Recreation

In the past century, Lincoln's Park and Recreation system has grown to become one of the best in the nation with it's 125 parks, 131 miles of trails, seven recreation centers, nine public pools, five golf courses, Pioneers Park Nature Center, Woods Tennis Center and our Team Sports Programs.

Lincoln's Parks and Recreation Department is a health and wellness leader in our community dedicated to health for their employees as well as the community.  Programs for children and youth are intentionally focused on increasing opportunities for physical activity, providing education about good nutrition, and improving access to healthy food.  "FUNdamental Healthy Me" Summer Day Camp programs are designed to help young people experience healthier lifestyle choices through fun recreation day camp activities.

Join us May 17th for Party in the Parks at Union Plaza as we celebrate National Kids to Parks Day from 4-9.

Give to Lincoln Day
On May 29, 2014 Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln will participate in
Give to Lincoln Day to support Lincoln Community Learning Centers (CLCs)
Being active and involved in recreational activities is essential to a child's healthy development. Unfortunately many children growing up in low-income families don't have the same opportunities to participate.
To help close this opportunity gap, we partner with local Community Learning Centers (CLCs) in before and after-school programs that offer opportunities for students in lower income neighborhoods to explore options to be more physically active and improve their nutrition.

Show your support through Give To Lincoln Day, and your gift will be increased by helping us get a proportional share of the $300,000 challenge match fund.

Visit  our online giving page to pledge your donation today!

Pledges made prior to Give to Lincoln Day will be automatically scheduled to post on May 29 and be counted towards the
match fund.
2014 Give To Lincoln Day
What is Give To Lincoln Day?

By Bob Rauner, MD, MPH, Director Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln
Last year we decided to answer the question of how the summer affected kids' fitness.  The answer?  On average kids became more fit during the school year and were less fit after the summer. So what should parents do?  Some helpful tips include enrolling your kids in activities over the summer and preselecting your children's food options.

What we do: Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln collaborates with local organizations on joint projects to increase fitness, decrease obesity and improve the health of Lincoln residents.  Our work includes improving health policies, conducting community level research, and evaluation of the success of local health initiatives.
