FARM WINTER PROGRAMS

From Field to Feed
Ages 4+
Sa    Feb 20  /  2-3pm
RES $5/NR $7.50  (Code 31042)

Back in the day, farmers used the long cold winter months to process autumn crops into livestock feed. The threshing floors of their barns became places to flail wheat, run oats through a fanning mill, or grind corn. Take this extended version of our popular Feed the Animals class and you'll get the opportunity to learn more about how crops go from field to feed by shelling corn, making grain, stacking hay and feeding the livestock!

Backyard Chicken Basics
Ages 4+
Sa   Mar 19  /  2-3pm
RES $5/NR $7.50   (Code 31383)

Want to know more about chicken care? Take this extended version of our popular Chicken & Egg class and get all your chicken questions answered. Examine feed options, chat about coops and find out what chicken is right for you! Farmers will discuss fertilized eggs, demonstrate candling and explain the incubation process. Before departing, kids of all ages can gather an egg and try holding one of the farm's Columbian Wyandotte chickens!

Saturday, January 16
2-3pm
RES $5/NR $7.50 per person
Code 31035

As the cold Illinois winter stretches on, local predatory animals like coyotes and foxes become ever more desperate to find food. Farmers keep a watchful eye - doing their part to protect their livestock. Come to this special Primrose Farm & Hickory Knolls partner program to learn about chickens and the animals that hunt them. Touch a hen, pet a pelt and find out more about the animal food chain. Program held at Hickory Knolls Discovery Center, 3795 Campton Hills Road, in the James O. Breen Community Park.
