Plenty to be Thankful for in Sequim!

It's Thanksgiving week!  The perfect time to reflect on what's important in our lives and acknowledge the things we are thankful for.  We have plenty to appreciate here in Sequim, and those of us lucky enough to live here are aware of it every day.  I hope you'll take a few minutes to become acquainted with some of our favorite things and places.

12 of the Things We Like Best About Sequim

Irrigation
The irrigation ditches in Sequim turned an arid valley into fertile farmland. Sequim celebrates the annual Irrigation Festival, the longest running festival in the state of Washington, each May. It was named the best Small Town Celebration in Evening Magazine's Best Northwest Escapes competition in 2015.

Weather

Sunny Sequim is one of the driest places in western Washington with an average of 16 inches of annual rainfall due to a rain shadow caused by the Olympic Mountains. Compare that to 38" in Seattle 65 miles to the east and over 140" in the Hoh Rainforest 100 miles to the west.

Lavender
Sequim is known as the Lavender Capital of North America® and is host to the annual Sequim Lavender Weekend each July with the Lavender Festival Street Fair, farm tours, and community events. Visitors come from all over the world to enjoy fields of this beautiful, fragrant herb.

Quaint Downtown
Unique family owned boutiques, shops, and restaurants make the walkable and charming downtown a popular place.

Dungeness Spit
The Spit, the longest in North America, stretches 5.5 miles into the Strait of Juan de Fuca and is home to the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge. Hikers are rewarded at the end with a visit to the New Dungeness Lighthouse.

The Olympic Discovery Trail
Popular with cyclists and walkers, the ODT stretches from Port Townsend on the east side to the Pacific Coast on the west with the largest paved stretch of the trail going right through Sequim.
James Center for the Performing Arts
The outdoor band shell located at the City's most popular park is host to the summer "Concerts in the Park" series and visiting performing artists throughout the year.

Olympic Mountains
The Mountains serve as the backdrop for the City and offer abundant outdoor recreation opportunities including hiking, mountain biking, and fishing.

Olympic Game Farm
Get face to face with wildlife at this drive through farm famous for waving Kodiak bears and llamas eating bread from your car window.  The farm worked exclusively with Walt Disney studios for 28 years and was a filming location for several nature based films including "Charlie the Lonesome Cougar" and the "Grizzly Adams" series.  The farm continues to be a refuge for retired animal actors and animals in need.

Fresh Food
The Sequim-Dungeness Valley is rich with organic vegetable farms and berry fields. Coastal waters and local rivers provide an abundance of fresh seafood.  Many local restaurants feature farm to table cuisine, local wines and brews, and locally roasted coffee.
