WALSH'S PERFORMANCE
EARNS CEO JOB
The Canaveral Port Authority Board of Commissioners unanimously approved John Walsh as the new CEO of Port Canaveral. He was selected to serve as interim CEO in March, after serving as Deputy Executive Director of Infrastructure since his hiring in February 2011. Walsh has more than 32 years of construction and real estate development experience and, during the past two years, has directed planning and development of more than $300 million in capital projects.

During his 90 days as interim CEO, Walsh dedicated himself to developing a vision of a strong future for the Port and initiating practical, immediate steps to build that future.

"John has demonstrated leadership, vision and an unselfish commitment to the Port, its staff, and the community," Board Chairman Tom Weinberg said. "I am impressed with his understanding of Port and community issues, as well as his understanding of the complex maritime industry."

State of the Port stage

INFORMATIVE
STATE OF THE PORT BRIEFING ON VIDEO
About 350 people attended the 2013 State of the Port on the Cocoa campus of Brevard Community College (as of July 1, 2013, Eastern Florida State College). In his first State of the Port Community Briefing, CEO John Walsh showed a commitment to transparency and community engagement as he reviewed the Port's history, assessed its current condition, announced significant business developments and outlined an array of plans to enhance operations and increase the Port's status as a powerful cargo and cruise center, as well as a successful recreation destination.

The presentation included several announcements of interest to the business community, including plans to carry out cruise master planning with public input; the proposal to develop a container cargo hub; announcement of a new cruise embarkation option (see story below); purchase of two container cargo cranes; potential for a facility to train cruise ship crews on fire, rescue and other important duties; and a proposal eventually to deepen the Canaveral channel to minus 55-feet.

PORT-OF-CALL SHIP OFFERS EMBARKATION OPTION
Port Canaveral has the highest number of
port-of-call visits of any cruise homeport in Florida, a testament to its dual popularity. When Norwegian Cruise Line announced its new 4,000-passenger Norwegian Breakaway will stop in Central Florida on 7-day itineraries out of New York City this fall, the company also announced new passengers will be able to board the Breakaway here for 7-day round-trip cruises to the Bahamas and New York City, This is an uncommon feature on a United States itinerary.

Port-of-call ships produce an impact on the local economy as passengers leave the ship to spend money on shore excursions, shopping, dining and other activities. In addition, Norwegian Breakaway will have some of the impact of a homeported ship through the activities of the passengers initiating cruises here.

CANAVERAL PURSUES INLAND PORT DEVELOPMENT
Port Canaveral is pursuing the development of an inland port near the north end of Brevard County, which has lost thousands of space-related jobs. Dedicated barges will carry cargo from Port Canaveral to inland transfer points and connect to Florida East Coast Railway. The project involves reactivation of a rail spur in Port St. John, located just south of the city of Titusville and creation of an inland port distribution center in Titusville.

"An inland port will create a commerce hub and expand opportunities for business creation, retention and attraction in North Brevard,' says Canaveral Port Authority Commission Vice-Chairman Jerry Allender.

By developing an inland port to expand transportation options and market reach, the Port hopes to attract containerized cargo via the domestic marine highway or international feeder service from other ports to Central Florida distribution hubs and consumer markets.
